This difficult to photograph palm is beautiful and becoming more available in s. California. This palm is growing in Palm Canyon, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. Photo taken Dec. 1, 2010.

Palm Canyon is being expanded...there should be hundreds of new palms and species put in over the next year or so.

It was reclassified about 10 years ago or so from the genus: Phloga to Dypsis.

Since it's from Madagascar, I'll have to ask a local palm supplier if it will grow here. Probably in part shade, though!

Most likely it would be a tough grow there in Phoenix. It need a lot of shade here to grow well. Also, it prefers lots of humidity.

Drat! Probably a coastal species, then. The same is true of the green-leaved, coastal form of Bismarkia nobilis. Oh, well!

Yes, Bismarckia nobilis (green form) is grown here along the coast...where it's cooler. I've posted several pic in the past on GoY. The silvery, blue, white form is much more common and extremely popular.
