it latin name is carpobrotus....but i was introduced to it as hotentot fig..

Yes, this plant has escaped cultivation and has taken over many area of California...it is especially widespread along the many freeways, park, and along the coast.

It tolerates very sunny, hot inland areas and cooler coastal areas also.

it just about survives outside here...frost and all....but it didnt like the snow ......;-(

Yes, where its native is doesn't snow. It's a very tough plant though...even withstanding fire.
