Small polytunnel

Small polytunnel

In addition to the glass greenhouse, we have two tiny polythene greenhouses: one for the begonias and another for larger plants in pots. We also have this small polytunnel which was kept above freezing with an electric heater set to come on when temperatures were dropping towards freezing.

This just boggles the mind!! Exhausting! Great to have the use of the tunnels and greenhouses though!

I see lots and lots of perlargoniums to grace your gardens. Just bought two lots of this shelving for our garden shed. So easy to put together and keep clean.

We did overwinter some pelargoniums last year - it was useful having some larger plants but, with such a harsh winter, we didn't want to calculate what percentage of our electricity bill went into keeping them alive.

In the spring we discovered that we could buy 20 young plants for £3 from the local supermarket - these were mixed colours. If we wanted trays of single-colour plants, we could buy 12 plants for £3. With a little cosseting, these plants quickly caught up in size with their over-wintered relatives.

Painful as it will be, in the next few weeks all our pelargoniums will be relegated to the compost heap. We will keep the begonias since they only need a little heat for a couple of hours a night in February to start them off.
