Pot-Bound Agapanthus

Pot-Bound Agapanthus

I’ve given up planting in shaped containers these days. When my agapanthus became potbound, it was impossible to get it out of its urn shaped tub, so I had a choice... destroy the plant or break the pot up..... discussing the choice with my resourceful husband he decided to have a go at cutting the container in half.

As you can see from this picture, there was no soil left around the roots whatsoever, and the congested roots had taken on the perfect shape of the pot.

Oh! and John bless him! glued the pot back together, so it is still in use. The root ball was chopped into many pieces which have grown on well.

Everyone is happy!

This is an amazing photo and story.
John is obviously very ingenious and inventive!
Do you have a photo of the glued pot with its new contents?

PS. Scotkat is going to comment on compost for containers under Cow Watering Lane later today. Hope this helps. :o)

Hi Terratoonie..... I'll look out the repaired pot sometime and take a picture for you. Thanks for the note about compost for containers..... I'll check it out later. Have a great day. Marion

In a repeat programme on the Gardening TV channel this morning Geoff Hamilton smashed an attractive terracotta pot to release a pot-bound plant, such a waste. I made a mental note to sit a straight-sided pot inside if I ever have such a pot to plant up ..... bet my memory will fail me ! Lol

Hope you can use your pot again, Marion, perhaps in two parts ..... now that would be an unusual garden feature.

Great picture. I love the roots shape, that's great. I've said it once and I'll say it again, "You're a good man, John." :)

Ooooh! I can almost feel the agapanthus' sigh of relief! Like undoing a corset.... I had to saw through the roots on a Cordyline plant to get it out of a shaped pot - it survived, but it was a helluva fight!
