Yes, you can't imagine the amount of roots there were in there! It's difficult without knowing how deep the barrow is. I thought of spreading them over the ground but didn't fancy the idea of having to pick them all up again!

Oooo...a good job done Balcony. Bindweed is a real trouble isn't it?

It most certainly is! It ended up smothering all the strawberry plants in this bed even though I weeded the bed several times during the summer. I spent 4 or 5 hours just pulling out as much as possible of the roots on several occasions only to see it grow back again almost as fast as I could get it out!

Gerry & I decided to get rid of the bed & throw away the plants. I rooted a lot of runners & made up a new bed in another place.

Probably best in the long run Balcony. Bindweed is one weed that I will use Glyphosate on.

Even though I've dug out so much root I don't imagine for one minute that I've got rid of the problem. There is no doubt we'll have to use a weedkiller on it. I found roots came up from over a spit deep! I had thought of digging it over in the spring but, depending on what we decide to grow there next year, I may well leave it alone. At least I won't be breaking up any more root & complicating the problem further!

Maybe once they've come back up again, spray it and then mulch it and leave it for the time being. Who knows, you may not even get them all with one application of weedkiller. :o(

That wouldn't surprise me one little bit, Gilli! Some of the roots are surprisingly thick! Some twist around like corkscrews as well!
