Oh dear !
Will the local council/officials remove the trunk now and replant ?

I'm sure it will be cut down and replaced. This section of Balboa Park has many tourist. Luckily, large Queen palms are pretty inexpensive.

What irritates me so much -- is with all the city budget cutbacks...these trees were not cut back...like they do every year in fall before the Santa Ana Wind season. If the the old heavy fronds and very heavy seed spikes were cut off...this probably wouldn't have happened.

These old Queen palms on 6th Avenue were planted more than a hundred years ago by a famous horticulturist - - Kate Sessions.

I see exactly why it would irritate you.
What a waste of fine tree, budgets and cutbacks will be the end of us :-(

Yes, you said it perfectly. The state of Calfornia's budget cutbacks just keep getting worse and worse...I don't know when they will end.

Yes, it's such a shame. Yesterday (Jan. 21, 2010) so many large Queen palms/Eucalyptus trees blew over on cars and houses causing a tremedous amout of damage. There's a huge 100 year old Atlas Cedar which blew down right across the street from this building in Balboa Park yesterday...it was on the T.V news last night.

I've never seen so many intense storms hit San Diego, CA in such a short period of time since I've moved here. However, it's suppose to clear out and warm up by this weekend.
