What do you mean "We're lucky it's good weather for gardeni...

I wish I had the language skills to describe the look on my husbands face when I suggested that we are lucky today has been a good day for gardening. It was reminiscent of the look you might expect if you had just slapped a small, smiling and angelic child: shock, surprise and astonishment that you would do (say) such a thing! Then the slow dawning of the horrible thought that they might be expected to HELP.
The 14 year old just gave me a bored glance with a “you’ll be lucky” expression and the 18 year old made it clear he thought I had now reached the stage of being sad-old-thing that must be humored, before exiting for a trip to the shopping centre with girlfriend.
I still think I have been lucky to have had a whole afternoon outside to get some real clearing done and make a start on those raised beds. The weather has held out and although a bit chilly if you stop working but the sun has made a shy appearance and the wind wasn’t too annoying.
Does anyone else have family as intolerant of gardening as mine?

Oooooo..........GM....I have 4 teenagers at home, none of them goes out in the garden without threats being uttered ! My husband is very happy to dig a hole if I need it or shift rocks etc but he would be quite happy if the whole garden was concreted over!! He keeps hinting to cut down fruit trees and extend the garage into the back garden so he can have a bigger space to work on his vehicles.
So, around here I'm the only gardener with any enthusiasm. It's a lonely life.!! My stepdaughter is convinced that I'm going to turn into an old "plant lady" with so many houseplants that you won't be able to move around the house. She says its "weird". LOL ..... :o)

Sounds familiar...my husband is very good at digging out lump of rock that I can't shift; making things out of wood; mending fences; digging out large root and cutting the grass. Otherwise he look blank when I say the name of a plant - he needs to be SHOWN where it is, a description is not enough!
My two 'children' are adults and live in their own homes, so guess who is the only gardener around!
Why do I NEED to belong to GOY? I don't need to spell it out, do I?

I'm with Irish on this one, sounds pretty much normal. I threaten mine "no help. ... no salad"! You want me to grow it for you to eat? Get out there and turn the compost!

Sounds normal to me as well. Mine keeps saying I think we'll grow this & maybe that and guess what it's me that grows this and that and he just asks how its doing......

It is so good to know I'm not alone! I think of you all when I'm out there and feel much warmer somehow!!!
Been pruning hydrangeas this morning - just the really needy ones; now it is snowing so I might have to cover them with a fleece blanket.
14 yr old just played rugby in Cheshire cup and got injured in final seconds; he's now in bed exhausted. 18 yr old pretends to be doing homework and husband is still at rugby club celebrating on behalf of 14 yr old - so no help today then?

lol ah thank you for that laugh... husband is soooooooo good to celebrate on behalf of your 14 yr old.
hope its no too serious an injury

No Irish it was just exhaustion after 2 late nights and a ferocious tackle on a boy twice his size; he hurt his shoulder but after the worst of the pain subsided he remembered he had been kicked on the knee! OK this morning though - the snow helped; he doesn't care that I told him NOT to walk on the grass when it is frozen..........

I have four teenagers, none of which is interested in gardening beyond saying the garden is looking nice. My husband is into lawn care and that's it, though is obsessed with buying topsoil for me to improve our soil because he likes how it looks when the darker soil shows.
He has been a little worried lately because he is starting to recognise and be able to name a few plants!

Frightening Gillian - stop the rot now, get him to dig the compost heap!

He's actually been taking me to greenhouses the past few weekends because he knows I get so totally depressed with looking at all the snow. I'll make a gardener of him yet!

YESSS!!! Gillian, you are winning - well done!

Ha!! snap!! i have a hubby who asks me if the dandelion is a flower and a daughter who although loves taking photos of the flowers etc., looks at me like i am from another planet if i ask her to help! (she's nearly 15 so i suppose its to be expected!) I only ask if i need a bit of manpower then he has to be supervised! Also went out today but here the wind was bitter so i only moved a few pots about and tidied up some dead leaves roll on the spring weather, its supposed to be snowing here on Sunday night could be up to 2" !!
