Finally Getting Somewhere . . .

I am new to this site, so let me start by saying “hello”. I must say that I am really glad to have found it! The pictures are amazing – so many awesome ideas!! My first blog – here goes . . .
Once upon a time, my yard was a disaster. At least to me it was a disaster. Maybe some people are happy with sprawling, oddly shaped raised beds full of nothing but stone covered dirt. I’m not. And maybe some people have a real affinity for red lava rock. I don’t. I gave away more pickup loads of round granite rock than I can count. I sold close to 300 concrete bricks. I moved countless wheelbarrow loads of red lava rock. And that was just the beginning. As I tore the unwanted down, I began to build on the bones that remained and slowly created gardens where there were only rocks before. It has taken 5 years of unbridled obsession to get my yard to a place that I can really feel proud. This year I have caged my errant project starting self and am determined to make the beds that I’ve got look their best before I go on making more. I have spent the last few weeks weeding, fluffing and amending the soil, rearranging plants and adding new ones to replace those lost during the winter. Once the beds are in decent order they are treated with a layer of bark mulch. I have now layed down 6 yards of mulch, and will probably need another 4, but I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It is such a great feeling to come home from work and know that most of my beds finally look finished. Just a few more to go. Maybe then I can take the time to just sit and enjoy what I’ve accomplished. For about 10 seconds. Then it’s on to the next thing!!!

Thank you all for the welcome - I will try to take some pics tonight of my progress . . . for some reason the ones I emailed from home don't want to load. Oh well, if at first you don't succeed . . . :)

I love what you are doing with your garden. I don't want to discourage you, but I have been working on my garden for three years now and am no where near done. In fact I'm beginning to think I will never be done because I keep changing my mind on where everything goes. And, I keep finding new plants to try. I don't think I will be able to sit back and enjoy it next year either because I have a whole bunch of new things I want to try and grow next year.

Thanks again to all of you for the welcome - I am really enjoying reading everyone's blogs and looking at the pictures!! And Valerie - don't worry at all about discouraging me. I, like you, love to change things up and really don't forsee myself as ever being "done" in my yard. I just can't wait for this particular project to be done so that I can move along to the next one. And when that one's done, I'm sure I will have come up with 5 more projects to get started on!! :)
