Some Pictures . . .

Here are some pictures of the beds that I have finished (some spots are a little empty, but I can only afford to fill them a little at a time)

This is a terraced garden I put in last spring – It took me days to hunt down all of the rocks!!

Shrub border along what once was a riding arena that I am slowly converting to gardens

Small garden at the very front of the yard – excuse the ugly orange tin in the background – part of the hay shed . . . :)

Long bed along the horse pasture. I just moved the lavendar and thyme and daylilies in last week and planted some geraniums.

On the way up to the house – just a small bed by the fire pit.

Currently my favorite bed – a shade bed with hostas, ferns, bleeding hearts, coral bells, astillbes, astrantias, brunnera, cimfuga, and others. Just kind of a mish-mash of colors and textures. I just added the rocks in the middle last week along with 5 cart loads of dirt.

A little close-up of my shade bed – I bought the two glass mushrooms this past weekend at a garden tour put on by the garden club that I am a member of.

From behind my Japanese garden – I put the rock walls in last year with rocks that I drug up from the creek that runs through the back

I recently transplanted the pine tree on the right – it is doing wonderfully, thank goodness!! And most of the rest of the plants came from my nursery bed up by the house – the geranium looks a little sick – hopefully it will pull through.

And that’s it for now – those are the beds that are finished for the time being!! Just a few more to go!!! :)

Thank you all very much!! So far all of the plants that I've shuffled around are doing okay - even the sickly geranium seems determined to make it. We'll see how they grow, I guess!! :)

Gardennut....I notice you have bark mulch on your flowerbeds and as we are establishing our garden space with turf and borders in the next few weeks, we have been advised to put down 3" of bark mulch.

I just wonder how you have found the bark mulch. Being from B.C. originally, I know it was a popular border cover but I have no experience of using it myself.

Lovely to see you back commenting on blogs this week. :)

Whistonlass . . . I love bark mulch!! It saves me so much work weeding and watering!! :) I usually get mine by the yard at just about any landscape supply company that would sell similar things like gravel, rock, or paving stones. I have seen it bagged at stores like Lowe's and Home Depot - but that would be a very expensive alternative. My only caution would be if you live in a windy area you may want to look at a bigger sized bark. Personally, I don't really care for the bigger stuff as it doesn't break down very quickly, and part of the magic of the bark is the addition of all the organic matter to the soil as it decomposes. Be prepared for it to darken as it ages and eventually "become dirt". I just till the old stuff in and then freshen the beds every couple of years with a new layer. :)

All that you say about the bark mulch is pretty much the same info that I received from the lady gardener who is doing some of our landscaping for us...so that has pleased me to know of your experience.

I very much like the rustic feel of bark mulch so I'm pretty sure we will be happy with that.

Happy gardening, Gardennut :)
