Thanks for your comment Simbad!
Your big agave couldn't make it even in the greenhouse? Maybe it was "the" winter; was it Feb 2011? Can't remember but anyway it's definitely better to be safe than sorry. I know exactly what you mean about the "spiny ends"; they are terribly dangerous.

Yes it was one of the freezing winters Tonnymoo it just turned to mush eeew, every other year it'd been fine in there kept nice and dry, those two winters finished off lots of my favourite plants and shrubs :-(, the same for everybody.

What else?
See who else is growing Agave americana (Century plant).
See who else has plants in genus Agave.
This photo is of "Agave americana "variegata"" in Tommymoo's garden

Mine from you are tucked up in the sunroom Tommymoo not going to risk them in the greenhouse after loosing my huge specimen a few years ago, aren't they awkward to move when they get that big I cut all the spiny ends off mine when we had Fudge he was a terror for sticking his head in all the pots and thought he'd do himself an injury.
Thats a beautiful monster!!!
