Erythrina lysistemon? - Coral Tree

How is that coconut palm they planted about 3 or4 years ago?

The coconut palm has been there for at least 10 years. I saw it last year, it looked good. I haven't been to that part of the zoo since Nov. of last year.

Is that E.caffra? Andy,you need to post closeups of those intricate blooms.

No, these are definitely not E. caffra trees. They don't plant them in the parking lots at the SD Zoo because the branches break too easily. E. caffra is a horrible liability tree (the branches with thorns falling on people). E. lysistemon and some other species have stronger branches than E. caffra.

Annie's Annuals has carried the E.lysistemon I see. She says its been grown in the bay area.
Well,if i had the room,it would be another tropical tree on my list.

E. caffra is widely grown as a freeway tree here. I see huge branches broken on them all the time. E. lysistemon is a stronger and more upright tree.

E. falcata would be the better tree to grow, as it grows much slower than all the others, which grow extremely fast. It's also one of the most beautiful!
