Well, call me ol' smug-face if you like, but I've just never had a problem with slugs and snails on my hostas.......I always think it must be to do with the fact that i have a good population of frogs, which I encourage, and I get regular visits from hedgehogs, and lots of blackbirds and the odd thrush. I don't use any chemicals anywhere in the garden except (very occasionally) in the greenhouse and anti-fungals on the roses - only if there's no alternative, so nature is able to keep her own balance. Also I think it helps to plant hostas in reasonably open positions - these are between an area of lawn and a paved area - so no dense cover near for slugs to hide in. Hope this helps Crazydi?
