Musa 'Ice Cream' - Ice Cream Bananas

Musa 'Ice Cream' - Ice Cream Bananas (Musa 'Ice Cream' - Ice Cream Bananas)

My Ice Cream Banana plants are getting super tall. The tallest one is most likely 25ft/7.6m tall. The sky was a little cloudy today, however, it was still 75ºF/24ºC. as our very warm winter continues. Photo taken Feb. 6, 2012.

Meanie:

I saw on the evening news regarding the unusually cold weather in Europe. In the U.S. it's the warmest winter in 50 years. Very strange!

In CA. we are officially back in a drought. :>( (well, at least we had one drought free year in 10 years).

My little banana plant looks like it's not going to make it through this winter.
I saw sooo many large trees all brown from the cold weather. Two seven foot conifers all brown....a row of very large palm trees all brown.....orange trees, lemon trees wilted....it goes on and on. Very sad, I've never seen it so bad here.

Alexandramou:

Have hope. Banana corms are pretty hardy...even if the top dies, it will most likely produce new pups.

Most likely the tree and palms will recover, it may take a little time, though. I do remember the 1990 freeze which hit mostly all of California. The palms, Ficus, Eucalyptus (tender species), citrus and avocado trees were badly damaged. The Jacaranda trees in the Central Valley of CA were killed to the ground, but most came back.

Here's some information about the worst freeze (1990) in California's recorded history. It was hit and miss in southern California, though (San Diego did not get hit).
