Why can't I grow phlox? I've tried and all the success I have is with the weedy, sticky, (almost wild) light yellow one? I'd love a nice bed of this...guess I'll just have to keep trying. Maybe next garden?

I've never heard of a yellow one, Lori! Do you know its name?

No I don't, Barbara... will post a pic,of the blosssom if I can find one...they bloom over night and like Oenothera their flowers wither with the heat of the day. Also, like the nicotiana sylvestris their leaves are hairy and sticky to the touch. very sturdy, almost weedy... but when planted in a solid mass they produce a pretty clump... the leaves are solid dark green. will take a look on the inet to see if I can refer to a site that will have all the info.

Oh dear!....it's a lychnis.....Well once again, I can scrape the egg from my face! What was it Felix Unger said about assumptions.... Think it went like this: "When you assume...you make an ass (of) u (and) me.." lol... sorry Barbara...speaking only for myself here. Thanks for questioning the existance of a white/yellow phlox. I checked an internet wildflower database, compiled by a man here in Ontario. Turns out it's not a native wildflower. Came to N.A. from Europe. flowers are starlike (Phloxlike), creamy yellow/white, bloom in the evening, and are sparse enough that a goodly clump is required to make a statement.. I've just posted a pic of one of the clumps which I have just clipped back...doesn't look like much now but it was rather pretty against the silver green of the spruce for the last few weeks...I imagine it will bounce back very readily...it's tough as old boots!
