I've planted two in my new bed - I had one in my wide border, a very old one, which didn't take kindly to being hard pruned. It was dug up and is no more!

Yours is lovely. I only, ever had one of these. I think it survived for almost a day and then turned it's toes up.

How strange, Toto. I never expected it to get so bit so quickly - it grew so huge in two years in spite of pruning that I was going to get rid of it - decided to massacre it and give it one more chance and will do this every year now. I've just read that it prefers acid, moist but well-drained soil, in fact everything it doesn't get here on my virtually solid neutral to alkaline clay. Grow them tough, treat them mean seems to be what works for this one.

I shall have to remember to cut mine hard back every year, then, Wagger. I don't want them taking over!
