This is the fruit pod of the Sterculia - a large, eye-catching orange-red capsule which changes from green to orange-red on the outside at maturity. The tree has dropped most of its leaves by the time the fruit pods appear at the beginning of winter.

Never actually tried the fruit inside - supposed to taste like peanuts according to the old local indigenous people ... hence the common name of the tree.
