A cornucopia of clove scented carnations!

Just a quick blog to show the variability you can get in plants when seeds are sown from hybrids.
I started with 1 hybrid Dianthus I bought to go on my raised bed a couple of years ago. Its name escapes me.
Anyway, I sowed some of the seed it produced and grew some plants which this year are flowering for me.
The colours are really nice and although each flower is different, the scent is still there.
Take a look and see what you think.
This is the original Dianthus that I bought: can’t remember the name.
And here are the seedlings it has produced……
The flower sizes are all different as well. The interesting thing is that the leaves are all virtually the same colour and size. I am on the look out for another hybrid of a different colour in the hopes of producing some more interesting plants.
Until next time, happy gardening!

Isn't that interesting!? You would expect some variation with them being from seed, but they are all really different from each other, the very dark pink one is beautiful, when it gets a bit bigger you should try taking some pipings from it and see if you can propagate more! It's yummy! :0)

What good variation on the original plant - saves you having to buy loads of different shades, doesn't it ?

It certainly does save buying plants. I am not that keen on the really dark pink/red one but it will be staying for now.

Wow, that's remarkable, Geraniumdad.
I have underplanted my Family Apple Tree with six different dianthus. They have been there for some time now so this year I have taken cuttings from them. Some of the plants have taken easily while others have been reluctant. I hope to have enough to replace each of the tired, old plants and still have some left over to use in my partner's garden and pass on to my daughter.

Well, what a lovely surprise for you! I see some have the 'pinking shears' edge, others don't have it quite so deeply cut. Love all of them . . . .

They all have a wonderful scent and the bees just love them. I was watching them yesterday and it was amazing to sse the long tongue poking its way into the flower.
