Dog Rescue

Strange weekend so far. Yesterday I collected a lovely cocker spaniel from the street where I used to live. He hadn’t been out, apart from being in a small patio, for 6 months. No food, no water and surrounded by broken glass. I took him to Sophie’s vet who checked him over and cut his nails so he could walk more easily. Tomorrow our lovely groomer is opening especially for him since he looks more like a bear than a Spaniel.
He loves my garden, especially the little pond which he sat in within a few minutes of arriving. (Sorry tadpoles). He walks round and round, sniffing everything and with Miss Sophie right behind him. Today he supervised the making and erection of ‘The Arch’ and seemed quite happy with the result.
He will be with us until Monday at least, after that I don’t know, but until then he will be outside as much as possible.
I hope to show how he looks now, and maybe how he looks tomorrow.

Will you not keep him Ginellie..or is there a lot of red tape involved ? Certainly he seems a lovely dog,and in sore need of a good home...................

He is such a lovely boy Donnah. You are right, he does look sad but I think he is very confused by what's happened. He is 9, which isn't that old for a spaniel.

Am I right in thinking he needs a new home Ginellie, thank goodness he,s with you at min.and also that he was not injured amongst that glass.........

No its not old at all Why dont you keep him

He was fostered for 5 weeks last summer B but then his owner came back and insisted he be returned. Nothing anyone could do apparently. Maybe it will be different this time - perhaps I'll get him a poodle cut and a pink rinse and then say I lost him in the park.

He really does need a new home Lin, but until his present owner agrees, or is forced to let him go, there isn't much anyone can do. I am checking on Spaniel Rescue anyway.

Difficult situation Ginellie, but whatever you do you must take some before and after photos, because this is not simple.Have the rspca been involved ? These things happen all the time and when the neglected pet has been "sorted" and recovered at someone elses time, care and expense the so called owner turns up and calls the shots. Its disgusting !

Yes B'bon, my ex.neighbours and myslelf have contacted the RSPCA many times over the past 18 months or so, by telephone and more recently e.mail, with no success. Yesterday I just decided enough was enough and took the dog away. Dognapping probably, but I won't be returning him easily.

Ok Ginellie..you have done what many would say, myself included,is the best thing for this dog. You know you have a fight on your hands, and the only advice can give you is to take those photos and be prepared for a fight.
Please give all details to the Spaniel Rescue Centre, and include your photos. Wishing you the very best of luck, and please keep us posted. As more people on GoY see this you will get lots of encouragement. Take care x

dont forget to get a report of the neglect from the vet. this should support your claim if you decide to keep him. well done.

Gordon Bennett!!!!. Sometimes rules are stupid, what you s,posed to do?wait until the poor thing is half dead, Bb is right gather as much evidence as you can especially vets report and pics. Sincerely hope you don,t get in trouble yourself and hope if said owner does get him back they realise people are keeping an eye on his/her neglect and either let the poor thing go or buck up their ideas and look after him properly.Good luck with everything.........

I will do that Seaburngirl, thanks. I tried to get an appointment at the groomers but she was fully booked. However I just called in with him yesterday to show her how he looked and she was so horrified she is seeing us at 9am tomorrow. As she usually finishes at 1pm on Saturday for the weekend I thought that a kind thing to do.

Goodness Ginellie....poor poor dog. You just did the right thing in taking him away. Make sure you take lots of pictures of the situation he was in too...the patio and all the broken glass and no food or water etc.
Please do post pics of before and after. I bet he is quite a handsome fellow when he is all cleaned up.

Good on you Ginellie! As well as keeping a pictorial log of all events make sure you keep all receipts of vet's bills, food, extra bedding needed etc. then, if the owners demand his return, hit them with the charges you have paid and threaten them with the Small Claims Court. They may decide it's too much cost and let you keep the dog. Worth a try. Good luck!

Oh ! Poor little dab ! . He's lovely. I do hope he goes to a good home.

Oh bless him! I hope everything works out well, he deserves to be loved.

good on you , many a time ive seen dogs badly neglected that i wish i had done what you did and just take them away.
its almost impossible to get the DSPCA over here to come out. no funding from the goverment so usually they cant afford to call out unless its serious.

I know someone who lives near a farm and the farmer had a dog tied up in all weathers with no shelter and no food/water. She took him and found him a good home. It's incredible how cruel some people are.
22 Mar, 2009
Oh my I hadn't seen the before pictures! Poor baby. Glad you dognapped him! Can't the owner be arrested for animal cruelty? You can in the States...and have to surrender your dog (cat, horse, etc) and pay a fine or go to jail if cruelty is proven...To me if someone treats and animal badly, they're likely to do the same to a human being...

This quite complex Raquel as many people have become a bit cute here allowing others to take their pets in groom them feed them incur vets bills etc ..then turn up claiming to have lost their dogs cats etc saying they ve been looking everywhere for them.
Also complicated by the lady being wealthy you know if you have money youre descibed as eccentric ..poor and your really quite mad .

That's terrible BB..why would anyone want a pet they can't take care of? I don't have a dog myself because it would have to be all alone during the day and the apt is much too small anyway unless it's a chihuahua and I don't want a dog that small...so frustrating...quite a scam to get others to take care of the dogs and then just "re-claim" them! Mmm sometimes I think wealthy people are the really crazy ones...and cheap! There was a guy in ES who was super rich but refused to spend a dime on nice things for his family...I've always been poor (well, middle class) but like we say in El Salvador, the ones who have hardly anything are the ones who share the most.. (loose translation) =0

True Raquel...you tend to find that people who have little give a lot.Says it all really !
