Today I visited a garden in Highgate Village, open early in the year because of the lovely snowdrops. Quite a wild and woodland garden, about half an acre, with many paths and water features and a large lawn.

Well, I say lawn, but actually it was completely covered in moss. I quite liked it and, having spent most of yesterday scarifying my lawns – such hard work – I wondered whether I should just not bother in future.

I liked this little water feature.

I was just about to leave when I noticed some stone steps almost hidden behind the trees, so of course I had to see where they led. A beautiful view of the lower part of the late George Michael’s garden. Carefully tended as you can see but the house is still unoccupied. A neighbour told me that he never wanted to move because he so loved the garden.

A very enjoyable day out and I shall go back in April when the camellias and magnolia are in bloom.

Thank you for sharing your day out with us Ginellie. I love looking at other peoples gardens. I do like their water feature. The whole garden looks so natural quite different to George Michaels very classical design next door. When I talk about my "lawn" I am really talking about my moss. There is grass there but there are daisies and dandelion too. OH does mow it but I gave up on worrying about it being moss instead of grass. It suits all the birds and other wild life - where would our birds get nice soft linings for their nests if we got too pernickety. My rules in my garden is a good way of ensuring you get what you want in your own private space.

Reminds me of those tea gardens I visited when I was in the UK when the pretty ladies doted over me with all kinds of delights and delicacies. My goodness, I never drank so much tea in my life.

Thank you all for your comments. I love visiting gardens because they are all so different and often pick up good ideas for my own. Next one not until April though.

The NGS gardens are always worth a visit, Ginelle. If you haven't got a copy of the "Yellow Book"(?) you might be able to pick up a free leaflet of gardens Open in Surrey from a local GC. Our local GCs keep leaflets for gardens open in Hertfordshire which details gardens open every month - very handy :)

I also like visiting gardens. I must be nosey! Have a vague idea that one of the gardening glossies has vouchers " 2 for the price of 1 visits to other people's gardens" in their April/May issue. Handy!

I picked up a London gardens open for charity booklet from the library Sheila. It covers a huge area so I pick a few new ones every year. All accessible by public transport which doesn't cost anything with the freedom pass - just takes a while to get to some of them.

That's good Ginelle - it's certainly inspiring seeing others' gardens :) There are some open on behalf of the Red Cross around the country too . . .

It lifts the spirit to see wild flowers too: I wonder if anyone knows a good place to see them in the West Country in May??!
