Gg New Greenhouse 2017

Hi All

Some of you may know already I have treated myself to a new greenhouse …. I thought it would be fun to record the build as I go on.

I have emptied the old greenhouse today (so many plants!) and have taken down and cleared all the area ready for me to do the footings.

Gg

Photo of old greenhouse 2016

I have used decking planks to hold in the footings, as the garden slopes downwards towards the river.

Added 4 more paving flags to the entrance

Both Gable ends nearly all put together

Close up of the metal base frame on the footings

Last of the photos , greenhouse 100% completed, just the plants to move in next .
Glad you enjoyed the blog
Gg

I have had the bay trees over 20 years , give the greenhouse a sort of grand entrance lol

two sets of shelves which will be useful

3/4 tonne of pea shingle in the base
I have left the far end with soil that goes down to a depth of about 24 inches and the the whole of the compost bin emptied in , I have arriving a seedless grape vine “Flame”
also I will be able to grow lettuce in the border , tomatoes etc will be grown in pots.

so thats it folks one completed greenhouse

Exciting !

you bet it is Terra .... I know hard work but I will put the time and effort in now and NO cutting corners ....
the old cedar greenhouse is about 16 years old so had a good innings.

Great idea before and after I shall look forward to your project of the build even though I love your old green house.

17 Apr, 2017

Thanks Thrupenny ... yyeee I liked the old one as well I was looking into a dutch style cedar alton , but have gone for aluminium as looking to the future I am not getting any younger plus this has a zero Threshold door system.

Gg

17 Apr, 2017

Yes those Dutch ones are a lovely shape so can see why as we all get older you have choosen aluminium.
Some thing I have always wanted a green house but never could afford one. Now seeing the high winds here recently have blown the glass off I am glad I have nt got one.

Lol I chat to a Dutchman every day who lives here he is related to the Dutch royal family his grand father owns Philips over there.

17 Apr, 2017

They did say cedar doesn't rot ... well it does slightly, but being wood it did warp I could not shut one side window and if a very hard frost I coudnt open the door! but it has done me proud over the years.

Mixing with Royalty are we !!!

Gg

Looking forward to progress reports ..

17 Apr, 2017

Yes, I agree with Terra ... keep the photos of your progress coming! :o)

17 Apr, 2017

I have never heard of cedar not rotting interesting I shall keep that in mind. Its a shame it warped though and good its served you well.

Lol yep he has a history site for our city where we both live you might of heard of the word to Coventrate we had Tony Blairs son living here too. which should give a clue to the city it has more than once been the captial. City of. England.

If you check out the Dutch Royals they always marry beneath them selves so we never can tell can we who is who even the way they dress.?

17 Apr, 2017

Keep up the good work Gg I like the idea of the zero door threshold . Do's it mean you won't break your neck by tripping over a threshold, if so I think I need one.
My aluminium greenhouse is now twenty years old but I think it will last me !!!!
Looking forward to see how the build goes.

I'm very happy with my alu greenhouse and can't wait to see yours! Go Gnarly!! :)

17 Apr, 2017

Rectangular? Will it have more volume, more growing space, you deserve it.

17 Apr, 2017

Its sad to part with attractive old friends but eventually the time comes... Looking forward to seeing the new one take shape!

17 Apr, 2017

This is brilliant GG,I love to see a good project.Clearing the site looks to have been hard work but what a great space you've got there.Looking forward to seeing your progress.

17 Apr, 2017

Thanks Tera , Karen and Shirley will do ..
.
Marjorie, yes "zero door threshold . Do's it mean you won't break your neck by tripping over a threshold"
Yes no step , the amount of times the watering can has gone flying lol

Siris , yes more space 8 by 10 feet lost some of the border but it will be more productive with veg etc.

Stera , yes it is sad as I have dismantled it all and its all sitting on the decking, I may make some cold frames out of the panels.

Loli, yes hard work but rewarding but I will do slowly but surely , all the footings dug out today and I will have a break Wednesday and restart Thursday , the flag stones that are piled on top of each other will be used as a path inside with the rest going around the outside to finish off next to the lawn plus side I can put pots on.

Looking forward to the next chapter GG,

this is such a rewarding project gg. I will watch with interest.
when we erected ours 20 yrs ago the concrete footings were hard work to lay but my word it has been worth it.

zero thresh hold would be a bonus here too but it was raised up so it would be level. easier than levelling the garden.

19 Apr, 2017

OBW, the weather has been kind.
Seaburngirl it was the zero threshold that made the final decision of choosing this make and style plus the colour !

Thanks both ....

Will be interesting to see the end result! ?

19 Apr, 2017

*New Photos added*

Thanks Maggie , yes it will be interesting to see the end result.

Just waiting for the footings to dry out, the metal base has been added on top and is 100% level and 100% square the amount of checking and re-adjusting but I did give myself more room to maneuver it just in case I messed up !! as if its not square the glass wont fit.
Added another row of paving slabs to the entrance.

Also you can see how the garden slopes downwards.

I have pre-made up both end gables 99% ready also 4 windows 99% , both doors 99% so I have made good use of the dry weather, so Saturday is the day !!!
I am aching lol

Sounds like lots of hard work to me Gg! And your making a grand job of it!
Plenty of breaks with tea and biscuits to the ready may be needed! Looking forward to seeing it when it's done. ?

22 Apr, 2017

that takes me back to our footings. a job well done there.

22 Apr, 2017

aahh thanks Maggie , you bet its hard work ... but just imagine the produce to come .... thats what keeps me sane lol

Seaburngirl thanks I appreciate you comment ...

23 Apr, 2017

That's definetly the way to think..... and looking at the new photos you won't have to long to wait till it's finished it's coming along very nicely!!

23 Apr, 2017

Oh my, just seen the new photos - looks great! It was especially good to see a chair waiting for you to collapse into! Funny how buildings always look bigger than the footings did - I've noticed the same with houses.

23 Apr, 2017

Thanks Maggie .. Nearly all done 95%, glass all in that was the easy part out of the whole build , so I did get it square. Birds have already christened the glass !!! didnt take them long.

The company says "build in a weekend! " I dont think so.

Hi Stera , I didnt have time to sit in the chair !! had the most amazing deep sleeps though lol
Yes looking at the 1st photos doesn't look that big but does now.
I will add some new photos over the next week and I have been so lucky with it staying dry for so long.

Gg

24 Apr, 2017

Your making such a good good job of it Gg you want to be careful that no one else asks you to put their green houses
Up! Lol.
Save some energy for when you have to start planting in it too!! He he ?

Some exciting times ahead Andy will the greenhouse hold more plants than your previous old one ,I notice you already have a chair installed but didn't see the cans of beer Lol .
How close to the river are you ?

27 Apr, 2017

Hi Amy

Looking at the photo with the chair I could install that in the Tate Modern lol , it made me laugh as it does look odd just a chair and nothing else, Steragram pointed it out as well lol ....
Yes lots more space and no ducking my head going in and out the door.
Final bits and bods so 99% done ....

River is about 70/80 feet 21/22 meters ish away , brown trout , kingfishers, pair of dippers that live under the bridge , little egrets ..... it does have otters but I have never seen any but I regularly hear a good splosh when I open the gate onto the river .

Gg

28 Apr, 2017

GG it sounds absolutely wonderful!

28 Apr, 2017

Thank you Steragram ....
Have a nose through my photos as I have some nice winter photos of the river .... it will take you a good 10 minutes to find them though !!

Just the plants to move back in ...

Gg

29 Apr, 2017

That looks really really LOVELY.......well done you....bet your proud of your hard work. ( and so you should be ) ! ??????

29 Apr, 2017

I just looked at the snow pictures of the river - they are beautiful. When you have some time (!) how about a picture at a different time of year? It would be nice to see the trees in leaf. And how about getting up horribly early and lying in wait for that otter, lol?

29 Apr, 2017

Oh and those bay trees look very grand indeed, can't believe you have had them 20years. How small were they when you first got them. I've got two standards, but they are a lot smaller! Lol

29 Apr, 2017

GG- a FINAL MASTERPIECE THERE !! Well done !! It will be so lovely to see the plants all back inside. Here's hoping a lovely GH season will follow ...
love, love, LOVE

Hi Maggie

Thank you , I finally sat in that seat lol looking at my greenhouse ..
The bay trees looked like two mops when I bought them , they got badly damaged in the winter 2013 and I thought I was going to lose them but after a very hard hair cut bounced back , the one on the left I am still having to shape...

Stera I will take some photos soon and PM you . Some people call it a stream but I get very defensive and quickly say "River" .

Thank you OBW , yes lets hope 2017 is a good gardening year for everyone.

Gg

30 Apr, 2017

You did well on reviving them then too!!
Green house builder, plant doctor,,,,,,, your talents are endless ! Lol ???

30 Apr, 2017

Your Sarracenia definitely look good in your new greenhouse. Do you sit in your chair and admire them, I would. Also your 2 Bay trees are to be admired.

1 May, 2017

Hi Siris

Thank you and more space for some new carnivorous plants I fancy some "venus flytraps " next and that one you suggested looks like a bonsai tree ? (remind me) .
I bet you like me and dont sit down for long notice something that needs tying in or pinching etc , deffo try this year to sit listen and watch !

Yes my bay trees had them so long now, they are due a annual spray of Epsom salts , will green them up in days.

Gg

2 May, 2017

Thank you for the update on the shading, so much better than white emulsion shading!
Looks like a Bonsai tree?? Miniature? Crassula? Oh, remember, talking of Carnivorous Plants - Drosera madegascariensis
Did I say! I cut the top almost completely off my mop head Bay. Was going to discard, but repotted, see if I can rejuvenate. Have started training a cutting as a new replacement standard for the back door tub.

18 May, 2017

thanks for the update. all looks happy and healthy. a job very well done.

lovely to get plants in and growing isn't it?

18 May, 2017

Thanks Siris ( poor bay tree) ! & Seaburngirl and yes not a greenhouse without plants.

greenhouse starting to fill up nicely, planted the sweet peppers and chilies , 24 strawberry plants 2 of each in 9 inch pots , vine has gone in "Flame".
Tomatoes I am about 2/3 weeks behind but they will fruit later so more than happy .. I messed up the labels so it will be a mix of Manx Marvel, Alisa Craig and Kellogg's Breakfast Tomato.
Delphiniums will be coming out soon .
so glad its all done now the aches and pains have finally gone , but I was so lucky with the weather.

11 Jun, 2017

Thanks Karen

"Flame " grapevine has settled in and has put on some new growth .

I love your "blue grass " coloured greenhouse and nearly bought the same make but I wanted the shelves the same colour and they coudnt do for me so I seen this and manged to buy a week before the prices went up and had a winter saving offer of free water butt and automatic window openers for all 4 windows and another 20% off the price , I dont want to sound as I am boasting but it does look great ... thanks
