Dying plants in Garden Centre

I have just come back from B & Q, What a dissappointment and a total disgrace!!!!!. The plants are all the same price as they were over the Easter bank holiday. The plants haven’t been cared for there all dying!!!!!! Trays upon trays of dying plants 3 for £11 any body interested??? I think not. The thing is whoever is supposed to be loooking after the plants have drowned them with water and just left them to rot. What a disgrace!!! It seems not to be my day today. It’s cold and dark and I cannot bring myself to venture out into my garden. It’s cold!

13 days ago I sent off for a pop up greenhouse From T & M to go over my small raised bed. It finally came today. I was excited; took it out of the box and straight into the garden wearing my coat… did I say it was cold ha ha. Within minutes of it being errected it fell over in the wind; well to be honest it was more like a light breeze. Not a good buy I told myself. To make matters worse, my daughter, the non-gardening one (LOL) game out into the garden an anounced “that’s useless what a waste of money” Can my day get any worse I wonder. No it can’t as guess what I saw sitting on my washing line…………………… What have I been waiting to see for ages…………………….A gold finch!!!!! My first ever Gold finch visitor to my garden. Now I feel a little happier

I must admit I get cross with B & Q too and also some supermarkets that just let their plants die - with a bit of thought they could sell lots more. From someone who hates to chuck any plant out its horrible!!!

I went to my local B & Q and have to agree with what you say about them being ill looked after. It was only luck that my daughter spotted a decent tray of lavender.

I was told about a garden centre quite close to me in Clent and was absolutely delighted with what they have there. Some of the plants and things are a little pricey but more than happy to purchase some pots and plants from there as they were very reasonable

I'm with you on that comment, Derek, love a traditional plant nursery. People seem to really care about their plants, not just their profit ! : o )

14 Apr, 2010

but living in London I haven't got much choice - no nurseries round here!!

B&Q are known for neglecting plants pauline, thats why i buy them as soon as they get them as for your pop up greenhouse you need to stake it down thats what i did with mine last year and was fine, used tent stakes, sorry you have bad weather its been lovely here again , i would go to carboot sales if you have them pauline, can get lovely plants

Thanks Sandra, please send the sun down my way thanks. I have had my heater on all day

14 Apr, 2010

oh no, poor you, got fire on now to take the chill off but still bright

14 Apr, 2010

Yes i'm the same, i was at B&Q the other day, there was a lady with a hose just pouring it on very, very dry and dieing plants, everyone was complaining, because they looked really bad, and the price was not lowered, my hubby said, what a waist! they will proberly bin them, where if they reduced there price, they would a least get something for them.

14 Apr, 2010

they don`t look after the plants in my B &Q either , perhaps a bit of staff training needed here !!.... and yes pauline it is cold here too..thinkin hot choclate ! ..mmm

Was at B & Q today, everybody was complaining and It was 10% off day.I just turned around and headed for the garden centre, its on the way home and got a nice Clematis and had a good chat with the owner. When I worked for B & Q on night shift (2 weeks) it was last duty in the morning to water the plants. it is cold tonight and the plant is in the shed for the night till i harden it off .

Agree about B&Q too. I never buy plants there anymore,as they are like,Sanbaz says,...if you don't get them when they first advertise as special offers, its a waste of time, and money we also have a 10% card for B&Q,on Wednesdays, but I can buy cheaper and better elsewhere

LOL am not a pensioner yet, so got my dad to come with me to get his 10% off Dont know why I bothered!!!!. All I bought was 6 large planters and a pack of 3 seed trays for £2

What is the difference between a garden centre and a nursery? Sorry if I sound a little thick on this one..It was actually a nursery I brought pots and plants from not a garden centre ( Clent Nurseries in fact)

14 Apr, 2010

The garden centres buy their plants from a nursery. Nurseries tend and love their plants. they do their jobs well, because thats what they like doing. Garden centres just sell plants for profit they dont care what state the poor old plants ends up in!!! Cazzalyn your not thick!!! if you dont know something you just dont know until someone tells you

Hi Great
Sorry to hear you have not had a very good day. I started with one of those little greenhouses. I put bricks on the bottom shelf to hold it down . I did have quite a bit of success with it so don’t be so disheartened. Like all garden projects if at first the seeds don’t grow try again!! Did you see The Edible Garden tonight? I thought it was very good I like the way Alice grows in almost anything.
Pleased to hear you had your first Goldfinch though….That’s good news. Hope you have a better day tomorrow :0)

Yes I notice that these super stores arn't that keen in looking after the plants, to me they are alive and they should be done for cruelty. As they say as a door shuts in your face a window opens and yours was the gold finches, they love sunflower hearts to eat, I have them by the droves, or even nigra seed

Ty Great for answering my question..I now know where I am going to get my plants and things from..This nursery really do look after their plants. In fact the ones I brought were still wet from being watered....

14 Apr, 2010

one of my local gc buys the dead and dying from b&q and he then gives them tlc and sells them at a profit for him and a hge discount for us. I got lobelia st elmos fire 2 yrs ago for a£1 each. they were 1.99 at B&Q so I cant grumble :o)

Not all gc are bad though.

14 Apr, 2010

I never know why they bother to have so many plants in some shops, they must make a big loss on them. They have the cheek to try and sell them all shrivveled up. lol.
I'm glad you had a goldfinch . I had lots in my previous garden but none here.:o)

Sueb cant watch the tv anymore as they put a huge new block of flats at the end of my road and now we cant get a signal!!!!! What channel was the program on I can try watching it on iplayer, even thats mucked up cos of the flats!!!!!

15 Apr, 2010

I think this is the problem with 'shops that sell everything'. B&Q are a D.I.Y. store, like many other shops they jump on the band wagon of selling goods that pull in the customer, you wouldn't go there if you weren't doing DIY but you may go for plants....Then you may just get drawn into buying something else...which they make more money on. They know nothing about plant care, and could not offer advice if asked for it.
Lets all go back to supporting individual shops and businesses, who have pride in what they sell, know what they are selling and how to look after it.

I'll now step off my soap box!......

15 Apr, 2010

Potty, I say that affecianetly. I had a bit of a rant with my blog. Feel free to stay on your soap box!! At least the people on here care about their plants. (yes I know theres a spelling error, I've got aheadache)

15 Apr, 2010

some of these big shops either water them to much or not at all...... so gla dyou saw a little goldfinch.lovely little birds....
