HOSTAS

One of my favourites is Hosta. In order to lessen snail damage (I see their shells everywhere on the gravel) I’ll plant it in a pot. Any ideas for the best variety in my area of Okehampton, Devon? I understand the thicker the leaves the less damage there will be.

Halcyon from Bowden hostas might fit the bill!
Superb in a container, this classic was named by the hosta man Eric Smith. Leaves are a smooth, intense blue and are of thick pest resistant substance so it is well deserving of its place in the Slug Resistant Collection.

I grow my hostas in pots now Greylady, with a couple of exceptions. I've found that planting them in pots, particularly the vase /urn shaped ones that have a lip, they don't get visited by slugs.

You can also buy copper tape at Garden Centres. Peel off the backing and stick it round the pot - slugs and snails will not cross it.
I'd recommend the variety 'Halcyon' as well

Build a wildlife pond. I done this a couple of years ago and I hardly see slugs as the frogs eat them.

Not such a bad sign if finding plenty of shells as birds must be doing their bit ..welcome to goy and to UK you must almost be 24hrs from Tulsa ..

Hi! I've just bought "Frances Williams" as they are supposed to be slug resistant. The leaves are thick and blue. I'm going to plant mine in a pot too, and I'm also going to put a layer of sharp stones round the edges to deter slugs. Let us know what you do!

I have hostas in pots. I put them on the decking. I find snails and slugs don't like to crawl over it. Mind you some of them will try in the rain.

I grow hostas in pots, in the top of the pot i cover compost with gravel & round the edgeat the top of the pot i smear with vasline the slugs & snails cannot get past the vasline as they slide.

Krossa Regal makes a great statement and ‘Sum and Substance’ (one of the biggest there is) or ‘Frances Williams’ (lovely colouring) are both pretty slug resistant.
