Pots

What would we do without pots, urns and all the many other sometimes strange containers to put our plants in? Last winter proved that it’s not a good idea to leave potted plants out in severe frost. This summer’s proving to be a difficult time to keep them watered. I’m not a big ‘pot person’ though I have a few as they give instant change. I have four large permanent urns and to have continuous colour I have three plastic pots that fit nicely in each. When a flower is over I simply swap the pot for one in flower. There are pots made from all sorts of material and if you want to know which is better for the plant, tune in to GQT on Sunday afternoon and you’ll hear the result of a test they did to see which is best.
Pots are a problem in Cheshire just now because of the hosepipe ban, once the compost starts to dry it’s a sod of a job to water it with a can…..glad I’ve only a few. Some folks plant up in the most unusual containers, what’s the most ‘unusual’ one you have ?

Hi heron...I am also effected by the hose pipe ban (liverpool) and i have lots of pots and baskets to keep alive, wish me luck :)
The most unusual thing i have used as a planter has to be a old terracotta jug that belonged to my friend who sadly passed away last year.
We were sorting out her things and I came across the old jug, nobody else seemed to want it as it is quite bright and tacky looking but it just stood out to me as its brightness reminds me of her and i feel its more quirky than tacky.
Anyway I planted a small fushia in it and its taking pride of place in my garden, for spring im planning on planting mini daffs in it. Its my small way to remember my friend and watching the fushia grow and come into bloom makes me feel like she is still with us x

My Belfast sink is my fav planter and plain Terracotta. The trouble with pots is the frost, some survive some dont and I dont know which ones till they are damaged. I do like a thick pot for plants as I found in the thin one such as tin the plants dont do so well. Also I never expect any plant to be in a container for more than 2 years also I like to ring the changes so 2 years is my limit and then they go in the garden and I have something else.

I don't have any unusual pots as such, but my garden is all pots. I have a yard, so pots, containers and hanging baskets aplenty...:o) It takes about an hour to water them, but luckily no hosepipe ban here as yet..... One of our GOY friends has a lovely display of hostas in a wheelbarrow which looks great, sadly I can't remember which member it is, (it's an age thing)...:o)

Three Belfast sinks and an assortment of terracotta, and a birdcage are in my garden. With the hosepipe ban it takes twice as long to water them, will have to come up with a solution soon .........

Oh well if it's not worth a penny it's a nice way to remember your friend.

I have 5 head planters. I use plants to resemble all kinds of hairstyles. Succulents are my favorite. Herbs do good too, along with vines. Conversations with friends can be really funny to say the least. Once I figure how to post pictures, I'll post them on the 'container garden' blog.

not so much unusual but last year I had so much trouble from rabbits 'Heading for Oz' in them that this year I put I put the smallest of the set of pots onto the largest and have been really suprised at the lovely effects and also that they seem to cope better with the drought ( and-- would you know it --- less rabbits !!)
