Cactus Corner/Container Gardening Dilemma

To all my “designing” friends… These are my cactuses (cacti?) that have weathered the summer and are soon destined for the greenhouse.
In the spring, I would like to rethink this litle area; it needs a little bit more life, “sphizerinctum” (now, isn’t that a fun word)… energy, if you will. I’m thinking of adding the rounder prickly pear (that has the fruit you can really eat) in ground to the right. I’m looking to y’all for more concrete ideas for a native or western setting?

Yes I was thinking that raising the plants with some colour would show them off more?

Yes, I like those ideas! And, Lord knows, I've got plenty of fallen branches this time of year. I'm making notes for what to be on the lookout for. Thank you both.

Ooooh aren't they lovely?! They definitely need to be at different levels.. up on steps or rocks of some kind. Love the big shaggy one!
You can get metal sculptures of lizards, beetles, dragonflies & things too to be scurrying amongst them...if you like that sort of thing.

Oh yes, I do like that sort of thing, thanks!

We've got some salamanders going up the wall ...they look like the real thing sometimes & make folk look again!! Ours were from an African crafts importer but I have seen them in all sorts of shops over here. Good luck with it all!!

Fluff said steps? just gave me an idea different height painted stools with a pot on each? Or how about painting an old wooden stepladder and putting a well anchored pot on each step?

All great ideas, but I would have to have bigger step ladders. I know you can't see it but the Holiday cactus actually represents one huge plant and four smaller ones on a 2-step (LSU purple) painted stool. Wooden stepladder is inspiring (if I can resist painting it). Thanks Fluff and DRC. And, Yes, I have seen those salamanders (especially at some of the Mexican pottery stores). Now, I'm getting excited.

How about adding some large flat rocks to raise some of the cacti, and some wood (driftwood, fallen branches) placed around so you have collage. I find that by raising plants and adding some natural wood/stones you bring plants in pots together in a central theme. I would even add a couple of small statues either in wood or stone to complete the look. ;)
