Green Woodpecker fledglings
3 comments
The Green Woodpeckers that I had hoped were nesting in the back of the Poplar tree (where you can’t see them) obviously did! One of my other blogs describes me finding the wood shavings that they had scattered when excavating the hole in the Poplar.
Over the last 2-3 weeks they have been seen on the Poplar and this last week the noise from the young in the nest has been incessant while they called for food.
Yesterday was the first day that any of the young were seen out of the nest, when one was on the path calling back to the other nestlings.
It then walked back towards the Poplar, climbed the Greengage tree and eventually flew back to the hedge close to the nest.
We don’t know how many they managed to raise, but there are several young calling for food from various places in the garden.
Today one spent about half an hour calling from near the shed on the ground, until it eventually climbed the semi-derelict greenhouse and flew off to the apple tree further down the garden.
Springwatch had Green Woodpeckers nesting close to Jackdaws and strangely our Woodpeckers were close to the Little Owl box taken over by Jackdaws. They didn’t seem to object either way, so good neighbours.
I would love to add some pictures but I have a new camera and though it tells me it has reduced the size of the photo’s to conform with the required size – it just won’t load! Doing something wrong obviously, but can’t work out what!

How lovely to have green woodpeckers nesting in your garden, lucky you. :O) I see them flying over and laughing at me as they go but not seen any babies. Paul gets them on his playing fields at work he says he sees them nearly every day grubbing the ants out of the grass. Lovely birds.
