My voles have now been joined by moles :-(.

My front garden is not very big and had been invaded by voles this summer. Last weekend it became obvious that moles has joined the party. Each morning, when the sun comes up, I look out the window to see if any fresh mounds have appeared and of course they have. I then have been clearing the dirt off the lawn, hitting the ground hard with a spade if the cheeky things move the earth while I’m out there but it’s not made any difference.
By Tuesday I had, had enough and called a mole catcher. The cost was a little bit more then I expected, if I’m honest. £70 for up to 2 moles, and then £10 for every mole after that. Then I got lucky, while talking to him, I told him what we do for a living and it turns out that he has an old shotgun that is broken and he suggested we swap trades. Hubby was fine with that so he is coming tomorrow. He did say that he doesn’t understand how the moles got into my front garden with such a high front wall, it’s 8ft tall. We decided they must be coming in with little parachutes in the night :-).
Below you can see the mess they are making just over last night.
On a totally different note, on Monday, my daughter Laura told us that she and her partner, Charlotte have set a date!!! Next August, so it is all wedding planning here. They have booked a local Manor. They have chosen it partly as it allows dogs, so even the boys are going lol, and I have already found some doggie ties for them to wear. :-)

Oh Stera. I am so sorry to hear about your cat.
Thank you for the complement, it really is coming along, it would be better without mole hills :-). I will pass on your congratulations on to girls.

Congratulations to Laura and Charlotte! :) But I'm wondering why you don't just use the molehills to fill the vole-holes! ;)

Very nice front garden btw! :)

Lol Karen, you're a genius!

Lol Karen. If only it was that simple :-). Every time I fill in the vole tunnels, the little horrors have re dug them by the next day. Think my Lupins are a goner as they have eaten most of the roots and the same with the foxgloves :-(. There are a few other plants I'm worried about as the tunnels go under them. Well, spring will tell.
Thanks about girls and garden. Think the wall is calling for a couple more climbing roses :-).

When we had moles, Jen, I read an article (!) that said asking them to move would work!! I tried it and asked them if they would move next door as my neighbour was President of an Animal Society at the time. They did leave and the following week the neighbour's hubby had his car exhaust down the mole hole as he had read that exhaust fumes worked!! The didn't but we had no further trouble with moles.
It's known as "passing the buck" or in this case, "passing the mole"!!
Congratulations to the happy couple (Have you chosen a hat yet?)

So that was what I was doing wrong Eirlys, lol. I didn't ask them nice enough. With my neighbours, I would be quite happy for the moles to moved there. Mole man has been and I now have 8 traps buried in my front garden.
As for hat, my daughter has said that her theme for the wedding is that everyone is comfie and enjoy themselves. She said that if I want to wear a hat, then it's up to me but I would probably be the only one. It is not going to be a big do, partly as my ex and his family disowned her when she was 16 yrs old due to her being gay and not spoken to her since. She is now 28 and says that the only family she needs is myself, my OH (she calls dad) and my brother. So not yet made up my mind yet about a hat :-).

The wedding news is great, Jen. I hope your moles don't come back tho'. We have them in Sweden but they stay out of the garden. Mind you the moose come in in the winter for the fallen apples. :0)

Moose in the garden! Wow, now that is something you wouldn't want, nibbling rabbits pale into insignificence beside that Linda!
Best of luck with the moles, though I do admit to feeling sorry for them, and great news about the Wedding, lots of time to make it a great do!

Thank you Linda235. Don't think I would want the moose either lol. Some of our customers might get a bit too excited. In the 2 1/2 years we have been here, this last week is the 1st time we have had moles. I still don't understand how they got there. There is no sign of any in the back garden, the front is surrounded by the wall and then it's the road. We have a very wide driveway which is all blocked paved and the other side of wall is a big tarmac car park for the shop next door. As mole man said, parachutes. :-).
Honeysuckle, I feel bad about the mole too. If they wasn't causing so much damage, then I would say, live and let live. What with the voles and now the mole, there is now only a small part of the lawn that you don't sink into as you walk on it. Lawn mower wheels are sinking as well as it is a big petrol one.
Thank you all for the good wishes for the girls. :-).

Why not forget the had and splash out n a nice hairstyle?
Yu could add a fascinator if you like them (but they can look silly if you're not careful...)
27 Oct, 2017
I like hats...informal ones...but I can’t be doing with those ‘fascinator’ things. Im sorry ladies, but I think they are absolutely ridiculous! Lol! But this sounds like the kind of wedding you can let your hair down at. My kind of wedding! :)

I'm with you on Fascinators Karen. Think really it will be just get my hair done. Years ago I had 2 weddings in 2 weeks and my girls were bridesmaids for both. The 1st was very proper and the 2nd was very relaxed and so much more enjoyable that I'm glad that that is the way the girls want to go. Already spending lots of time on internet looking at cakes, table decorations and things lol. The girls are talking about some quite wacky ideas just to make the whole day fun for everyone.

Thats lovely of them to be thinking that way. Usually you just end up standing around while the Bridal party have all the fun. At our niece's wedding there was a magician going around all the tables entertaining us. He was excellent too. And they also had a photo booth with fancy masks. They had a sweetie shop and fake stick-on tattoos...something for everyone so we didn't get too bored waiting for them to have their photos done. Then later in the evening when everyone started flagging after the dancing, there were burgers and bacon butties instead of the usual canapes and buffet. Yeah..they really made an effort for all of us. :)

That sounds like it was a fantastic wedding. One of the things they plan to do as long as weather is nice and the Manor has some lovely grounds, is to get some oversized garden games. One of the wedding fairs they went to, a stall had centre table decorations being fish bowls, which they said that stuff was added to water to calm the fish. Laura throught that was horrible but they are thinking of have fish bowls with some flowers floating but putting windup swimming toys on the tables. I really like the idea of photo booth. A wedding I went to had the same sort of thing set up. I think you had to pay £5 per photo but 2 printed, one you got and one went into an album for the couple. The photos got more silly as the night went on. :-)

Yeah, that's exactly the kind of thing Jen. Our Niece and her husband are Goths, so there were skulls on the tables and the wedding took place in the Vaults in Edinburgh. No outdoor space, but loads of candles everywhere and cobbled floors. It was very different and very 'them'.

Well it all sounds as if it could be great fun, Jen. A distant niece for her second marriage had an ice cream van; a fish and chip van; a curry van; a pizza van............you get the message. Sounded a lot of fun from the re-actions.
I'll settle for a Las Vegas one with Elvis next time ! :O)

Laura used to be a Goth years ago Karen and your niece's wedding sounds great. Think we have got some planning to do ovef the next few months lol.
lol Eiryls, that doesn't sound a bad plan to me, just not sure what your hubby's view are on that or if he knows about "next time" lol.
:-)

Jen did you ever see the photos of Sandra's wedding? If you like casual and very different you'd enjoy them. I think they were on her blogs rather than her photos. Well worth a look!

I remember it Stera. That amazing caterpillar and the theme of Alice in wonderland. Wish I had the land to do something like that here. :-).

Exciting times- Congratulations to the happy pair!
Your front garden looks lovely in spite of the molehills. You've got a good arrangement with the molecatcher there!
I'm hoping ours don't come back now our cat is no longer a going concern - she cleared the lot.
