A riot of colour

Hello everyone here we have a display of pots that i started off in early january and i have tried to create a minature herbacious border to hide our neighbours fence and the harshness of the top of the driveway, most of the pots contain perrenials that i divided on the allotment and as the summer has progressed i have added a few small roses and annuals to keep the colour going, hope you enjoy, julien

Lovely use of pots, creating a lit of height. Very clever of you.

That's a beautiful herbaceous border Julien! And all in pots, incredible! Well done!

wow, fantastic, :^)

Wow that looks amazing, wonderful selection as well, and doing it that way you can swap them around if you need to or just because you want a change, Im impressed Julian..

Thanks Beattie and Daylily, i have been juggeling the pots around all summer and taking away the pots of flowers that have faded and replaced with other pots of perrenials that are waiting in the wings, i would say its at its best at the momment, rudbeckias, teasel, tansy, lychnis, crocosmia, lysmackia ciliata, alcea, and asters are all now jostling for supremacy, will try and get some more pics up as the season fades to autumn and winter.

Thanks Linclass, what i have tried to do is replacate one of my allotment plots which is completely crammed full of many perrenials etc, everything on the allotment i have propagated over the years, looking after peoples gardens has its perks, you get given allsorts and if not i will ask or even share plants between clients, sometimes however in my job you just cannot keep everything and sad that it is i have to get rid of many plants that could be given away, the other day i actually filled a brown bin half full of the black grass ophiophgon and it costs a fortune to buy, i just have not got the room or time to deal with all these excess plants.

It's nice to grow things in pots because you can move them about to have a change.
Your border is lovely :o)

That's very nice. A lovely splash of colour.

Why do you keep them all potted ?
22 Jul, 2011
Louise, most of mine are in pots. It makes them easier to move around. Mine get moved a lot to keep the display looking different.

I see.

They take a heck of a lot more looking after - I take my hat off to you! :-)

Very impressed, you wouldn`t guess they were all in pots.

Thanks Hywell,Alextb, beatie, stroller, louise1, the reason for potting these up Louise was to experiment to see if i could replicate the borders i have on the allotment and also to transform a very drab looking top of the driveway, and it has been a joy whatching them grow up from vitually nothing, another reason for this idea is that my back garden is a secret type woodland garden and they would not do well in this environment.

Very pretty planting, Julien :o)

Most impressive, Julien.....if you hadn't told us I'd never have realized you were using pots. It transforms your fence area so nicely and it's all so lush. Great idea.

Thanks Teratoonie and Whistonlass, Its great watching from the kitchen window, all the perrenials coming into flower, i think that this year there are lots of plants that are coming into flower much earlier than usual, have you noticed this as well.
25 Jul, 2011
Hi Julien, it's looking fabulous and does look like a border. I think the early flowering is due to the hot dry April...did you hear about how far forward english apples are this year? Apparently discovery apples are in the shops already:-)
26 Jul, 2011
Hi Bornagain, thanks, yes someone was telling me today that alot of the apple crops are much earlier this year, i have had Asters in flower since the first week in july, also solidago and crocosmia seem to be flowering much earlier than usual, hope your well and enjoying the garden.

Certainly the best year ever for roses...
and yes ...
some plants have flowered earlier than usual ...

That looks so lovely, Julien. You've done a brilliant job.I like the sound of your 'secret type woodland garden' too. Will it remain a secret or will you invite us in...?
I agree that things seem to have been earlier this year too. Many traditionally 'end of Summer' plants are already in flower and more plants than usual seem to be producing a second flush. It's great!

Thanks Tuesdaybear, yes i will post some pics of the garden when i get five mins, the back garden is the typical long surburban strip, aprox 100 ft long x 20ft wide, the garden when we brought it was depressingly bland, just an old neglected lawn an old grey path down the middle with a planter at the end, one of those inside out car wheels painted white and one small conifer, from the onset 1988 it was planted with various trees [sapplings] that i rescued from a nearby bypass that was being constucted, the rest i propagated from seed, its a haven for wildlife, foxes , hedgehogs, frogs, field mice, bats, squirrels, all thrive here, with many birds taking advantage of the abundence of food that the trees offer, at the bottom of the garden i built many years ago a large deck area at the bottom of the garden, which is now well weathered with parts starting to come away which is what i like it makes it look more interesting, on top of this old deck i positioned this year a summerhouse, painted rustic brown to blend in, its a secret hideaway of pure solitude that i can sit in and which inspires me to write poetry.

Sounds wonderful Julien. Do the bats actually roost in your garden? :-)
28 Jul, 2011
Hello bornagain, the bats are pipistrelles, not sure where they roost, maybe under the eaves of the house we have a few bricks with gaps in where the sparrows nest so maybe they could be in there.
