What is the best thing to do with Tortoiseshell Butterflies which still keep appearing indoors on a sunny day? I don’t like to put them out, or will they re-roost inside?

I hope you feel better soon... and that you get some advice about the butterflies. xxx

where are they emerging from? I suspect they wont survive outside but they will need nectar to survive. Ivy is a good source of nectar. they may well re roost. I dont really know i suspect is the correct answer.

I thought butterflies hibernated. Maybe I'm wrong.
I used to find lots of Peacock ones in the small bedroom. I used to put them out through the window.

Hi Lizziebee...yes I agree with Sbg..they will roost...or should I say hibernate ! Have one in the porch at the moment and am leaving alone...I know it is not dead...just asleep.Hope this helps...oops sorry Hywel....crossed with you here !

Thanks, I think they come in thru open windows in the summer, & hide in curtains and come out on sunny days, I hope left alone they will go to sleep again again, not by flying round the room though. I have found dead ones in the spring before now, sad really.

the following link has information. They say that Comma Brimstone, Peacock, Small Tortoishell and sometimes Red Admiral butterflies all hibernate. If you find one in your house t is best to move them to an unheated outbuilding or shed.

Good info Scotsgran..

Thank you Bonkersbon I used to worry about butterflies that flew around in the house until I found out it is the central heating making them think Spring has arrived. They will happily settle in and go back to hibernating if you can catch them and put them somewhere cooler. .

They do Scotsgran..thats why we leave well alone in the porch! Certainly cooler in there...;)

Thanks all for your advise, Next time I see one, I will put it somewhere cooler.

Well done, Scotsgran on finding that link ...
you've found useful links for several members recently ..
brilliant :o)))

Thank you TT. I think many of the questions asked on Goy could be echoed by many of the members and its good to be able to benefit from the experiences of fellow members. I sometimes wonder if it is a bit presumptuous to put on a link rather than explain things in my own words but personally I find its better to read something for myself.

I know exactly what you mean Scotsgran ...
I have sometimes hesitated in adding a link to help reply to a comment or question ..
.. but if that link really does help, either with its text or additional photos, it's worth doing :o)))

I have found some amazing links. I never trawled the net until I became a Goy member. I would say I am a pretty middle of the road computer literate person because I have learned a lot from other members.

Yes, I agree. Being on GoY has encouraged me to learn different computer techniques.
