Abandon Ship?

Nautically speaking, it seems that a few members think that GOY is taking on water and will eventually sink. Some members have or are seriously contemplating abandoning ship after being on board for many years….even back to the time it set sail. This perceived situation may truly be. I am reminded of Joseph Conrad’s story, “Lord Jim”. Jim was an officer on a passenger ship which was taking on water in a storm. The Captain perceived that the ship was sinking so he ordered a life boat brought down and he and a few crew members, including Jim jumped into the life boat leaving the ship to suffer its fate will all others on board with no formal “Abandon Ship!” being given. Jim and the others were rescued by a passing freighter and they all thought that their ship sank to the bottom. Arriving in port they found that very boat docked in the harbor. What they perceived would happen did not. So……..
Not like Jim, I will not Abandon Ship! until a formal notification is given for I do think that GOY’s founders would be considerate enough and not so cruel as to let the GOY Site Server go down to Davy Jone’s Locker without giving the members who love GOY so much as a clue if that were to happen.
A few suggestions though. If you post pictures on any site including this one with the idea of deleting them on your hard drive to free up space you are making a mistake. There are many storage devices available now so you don’t have to take that chance. As far as Goy Blogs are concerned, if you want to take a Blog (yours or another members) and save it to your own computer I would suggest that you take a “Screen Shot” of it (very simple to do) and save it to a device of your choice. Shuffleboard anyone?:)

Well said Steragram!

Not abandoning L'strife, just adding another one or even two to ones fleet, one goes down we're already sailing in another so all is not lost, actually no different than having more than one prog on the telly, radio or a room full of books to choose from.
Whilst I'm still here and capable of using the web I'm going nowhere but as I said, when one is used to having like-minded people to converse with it gets darn lonely when it decides to not work, I've been there so know what its like, doing it my way I have the best of both worlds....

I hear you Loosestrife2. I never felt this site was on the threshold of obliteration, though it certainly could use an overhaul. By far the pros outweigh the cons. I know whenever I upload a blog or photo or comment, I relinquish all ownership rites as it becomes public domain. Should I rely on somebody else to maintain my files for me? That's precarious! They aren't mine anymore once uploaded. Nothing is guaranteed in life. How weird and unfortunate that some place their personal garden flower files above the human friendships, sharing and exchanging ideas and comradely. They go out with much ado and fanfare.

You should always check the terms and conditions eg if you use cloud to store your photos google have the right to use your photos some sites will say once you upload to their site those photos belong to that site .
The first garden site I went on their terms and contions said it .
I also had this problem on the first garden site with google taking and using my photos so I informed the owner of the site as his son worked for google he kindly had my photos taken off.

Loosestrife perhaps some dont realise how the site works at times it dies off in certain seasons with replies or likes also people have their favourite groups so most only comment on their favourite people with photos or blogs and miss others out especially if they dont have a lot of free time to spend on here or busy having big gardens to tend .
Also over the years that I ve been a member you will find come Spring lots will comment on photos and upload lots of pictures after having such dull winters we look forward to seeing our Spring blooms then sharing them to cheer others up and hoping we will see some new plant varieties.
We also seem to have more Spring flowers than summer or Autumn and Winter plants over here in the UK in our garden centres so then we get to see the American Australian Brazil plants.
Plus the fact we dont live in the same kind of climate or have weather as most parts of America have so come summer we are either making the most of the bit of sun we do get by going out side doing out side chores or gardening or taking trips or a holiday or not having time on here as most of us look after the grand children in the summer holidays or other school holidays so dont have the time as both their parents have to work over here which is expected from our government both parent have to work.
I ve always tried to comment or tick like on peoples threads that dont get many comments to encourage them so they dont feel they are being ignored and their effort was a waste of time or make them feel their plants or garden is nt good enough as over the years I have known people pm me feeling this way when they feel they are in competition with large gardens on here my own daughter was one who left here because of this I am more patient her dad was nt patient he was a Glasgow Scot lol. When the sun is out I am sitting in my garden to get the sun to build up my immunity them have dinner and fall asleep lol so there are days I dont comment or I have visitors or my helpers stay longer.
Some like more attention or more patient than others some give some just take and dont give back but thats life . I know I wont be liked for this but then no one likes the truth.

I'm much the same as you Tpb, there are probably lots on here I don't see, but I still enjoy recording my plants and adding a few photos even if it is just for myself, but appreciate it when someone takes the time to like or comment, I visit when I can :-))
Loosestrife, long may it continue, I copied my plant record a few months ago (not that I have all that many) as I saw comments that it may close :-)

Thank you Daylily 😊

Following on from 3d and Daylily: I'm new but I do like to share comments and photos with like-minded people and it's good to have comments from 'disinterested outsiders' (if you'll pardon the expression). I've learned a lot on here and feel welcome.
I think it's a shame that so many people add their names but then don't go on to contribute. The more the merrier.
I feel it's lovely that some people here have taken the time to respond to me, so in that respect it is very encouraging to newcomers. You don't like to think you are posting into a vacuum, which can be disheartening, although I realise not everybody has lots of spare time or is retired!

I like this blog because it points out that nothing is guaranteed in life. We might love the site and feel all the members are friends, but it might still be gone one day. Bit like plants in the garden, here for a while then gone.
I wish people would take this pandemic and realise that there is more to life that acquiring things (apart from plants that is!) and the Government doesn't owe everyone a hand-out, the UK is much better off than many countries, imagine having to pay for all that care, having nowhere to live if you did get better. In the past it was "it's a Nanny state, they interfere too much", now it's "where's mine?, you owe me".
Bit off track all that, but this site is a lull in the storm a blessing for us all, long may it stay.

Honeysuckle the government purposely made this a nanny state and greed for materials things they class as luxury it also helps greedy manufactures and the middle man trade hence thats why they track us on the internet to push their goods by sending adds to your internet .
A lot say they took George Orwells novel 1984 and turned it into reality with big bother but they also took Huxleys too if you read Orwell v Huxley by pruposely giving people all these things of luxury the people will not care and give up their freedom easly and those that become bored turn to drugs and lay drugged up
most of the days . They have created a weak willed society with our young brain washing them in our schools and universitys and college's too.
If your on about recent events in our cities and towns getting things out of us follow the money its the Democrates where their donations go to for their funding young lads have traced it back to them on their pcs.
Then imo drugs causes crime crime keeps people in their jobs and keeps the insurance companys richer as your premium goes up and most have loans from banks to fix crime damage if you are not insured.
I dont see mps or super rich cutting back on their luxurys which comes from the tax payers though. Then talk about the planet yet still fly about the globe and still drive their gas guzzling cars .
As of paying for care we have paid for it through our national insurance. Years ago you were kept in hospital prior to care homes existing when going home your family came in or look after you until you were able to be self sufficient which I remember with my grand parents now the government want every one to work in the family so no time to look after you I lòoked after my mum for nearly 30 years as I did nt want her in a home knowing from my daughter who is a professional carer in oap homes and mental disabled homes how they are really treated.
Perhaps if government did nt loose peoples pension money by gambling it on the stock market then people loosing thousands in their savings from 2008 which again was governments fault these people could of afforded their own care less stress on the system. People have short memories. !
They have divided the young from the old with hate even with this virus kids spitting in the elderly faces so fearful to go out like my sister who is 75 in case some youth spat in her face just like they have with the working class to poor also the disabled and the people fall for it and follow like lambs to the slaughter when will people wake up to this system thats been going for donkey years.
As having no where to live you will survive 3 times I ve had no where to live being homeless with two very young children living in cars outside sheds and toilets in the 70s I was 19 and married my husband worked too so I know what to do and expect if it did happen again I know whats ahead and that is the thing its the fear of not knowing .
As mum use to say oh what a tangled web we weave when we plan to decieve (governments)
There is an elderly doctor that has investigated this virus on you tube Vernon Coalman he states this virus is no more than a flu and he is getting ready with others to take the NHS to court for it with the death cirtificates he said they are clapping the nhs in his opinion they want clapping in jail. In America medicare pays thousands for each pnemonia death more for covid even more if died on ventilation I say follow the money its all on line.

I do miss some blogs Daylily and Anget, when I realise I often work backwards, sometimes I even apologize, lol,its impossible to catch up with the photographs so I look at them when I can, I do like to check over the questions but rarely answer, that stems from the good ole days when one often got shot down in flames if one disagreed or gave an opinion, I'm old-stager and admit sometimes I just browsed through them to see who was having the latest argy-bargy, we've had some fun times over the years, I know some of you will also remember them, lol.
I do like the fact that there are blogs posted now and again from members that weren't here for a long time, I've often thought back and wondered about those members, its good to find they are still here, even though I've never met anyone from Goy I have made many friends over the years, received advice, plants which is lovely and to this day they carry the name of the person who gave them to me, lol, life just gets in the way sometimes as it does with many things, luckily we weather the storms and hopefully carry on..
Anget sometimes if one hasn't been added to a members favs it doesn't show up on their news when that member posts a comment /blog or photo, think that might be why I haven't seen all you have posted, I'll rectify that now...

Thrupennybit...was that (big bother) a Freudian slip? If so I like it!
I'm one of those who left for a while...my life changed in that I stopped travelling; gave up work; found new family members who wanted to meet up; and took on new careers, ironically one of those included gardening! Plus, as a person who enjoys writing; I had one of those 'blocks' and found it really hard even to pick up a pen.
With regards to GOY closing (if ever). Plants die; break down; enrich the soil and nurture new plants. Those new plants may find a themselves in a world that's changed yet...they are much loved. x

Yes it was The white horse after all it is whats going on in this era.
You seem to have lead an interesting life. Many great writers get a mental block you made a good choice with gardening its very therapeutic too.
I myself cant see Goy closing in the foreseeable future either as there are always some that start to take up gardening and get curious and start asking questions here then join the site and get hooked. 😊

Lincs: well, we can't all agree, can we? As long as people are polite I think lively discussion is healthy. I can't understand how you could fall out seriously on a gardening forum, anyway.
As for politics, well that's adifferent thing entirely....
17 Jun, 2020
Where there is a will there is a way Anget, politics and religion is something I won't get involved with, my gardening pages are to be enjoyed....
17 Jun, 2020
Lol Linclass you wont find me arguing on religion as I dont believe in any of it even though my grancha (grandfather) was a preacher. Politics comes into all our lives with laws even with how high we can build fences in our gardens also what plants we are allowed to grow or to try and charge us extra tax if we have a paved patio which failed thank goodness.
17 Jun, 2020
Oh I know that Ange, I mean I won't allow them to encroach on my pages, a minefield I want no part of, I love my gardening and have always enjoyed the interaction with my fellow members, long may that continue....You'll probably laugh but I saw a stranger in the garden today, well actually two, the excitement was nearly too much for me.." Our Window Cleaners Arrived " now its clouding over, no surprises there ,aye, a little bit of normallity......LOL..

Gosh we are all letting off steam! It's better for you than bottling it all up after all...
I've said before I don't like the idea of having favourites. New members or those who are not "social" enough to have many followers will feel rather left out. I know I did when I first joined. I think we are much better these days at welcoming and accepting new members. I try to make a point of putting some sort of encouraging comment on newcomers' posts, and I know others do too. Being fortunate to have the time I try to look at every post most days - beats dusting and cleaning windows, neither of which I'm very good at...

I remember you saying that a long time ago Stera, I add them for the very reason I gave to Ange, I had only seen one of her posts, I'd missed Davey as well, haven't a clue how many I follow, out of curiosity I'll probably have a look now, I guess we look at it in different ways, I don't see it as meaning someone is more popular than others, I use it to get my notification prompts on my news page, ..
I've been naughty since lockdown, I spend most of my time outside , catch up indoors when it rains, even then I get sidetracked so the jobs are done in a very halfhearted fashion, I lose my mojo a lot since I lost my sister and simply cannot be bothered.....
Just to prove my point, why did you become Steragram2, I have been missing your blogs and only just found out tonight because of what we are discussing, you're not in my favs and you were and have been for years, I checked your profile which says you only joined last year, now I know that's wrong don't I.....
17 Jun, 2020
Apologies 3d I called you Ange, getting old mate, it won't let me edit to put it right, weird really as I was able to edit my comment for Stera...
17 Jun, 2020
😄 Steragram my mum use to say the same about dusting and cleaning windows she would say that will still be there when we are all dead and gone.
18 Jun, 2020
Yes that is typical Lincslass of window cleaners hence why I got rid of mine plus if I was nt in they only cleaned the bottom windows so my grandsons clean mine now.
It must of been nice to see some else fresh faces coming in your garden with this lock down even if it was the window cleaners.

Well said Loosestrife. I'm with you all the way. I might sound pathetic but Goy has been somewhat of a lifeline to me sometimes and I will not abandon it . You don't help a failing marriage by having an affair - at least I hope you don't...
