Thank you all for such a hearty welcome to the site. I am almost fully recovered and back out in the garden. I was planting out some badly neglected seedlings today, when I got to thinking about my gardening journey. I have been at it for four years now, and I feel like this is the first year I really had a grasp of what I was doing. It is my first year doing a second planting of peas, beans, carrots, and spinach. It is my first year focusing on the flower garden as well as the veggie garden. I must admit up until this year, the flowers were pretty much left to fend for themselves.
We bought our first house, this one, three years (four summers) ago. We have been busy in the yard since we bought it, but we never seemed to make progress. This year was different.

We started out by using the side yard that had been neglected, instead of the main yard where the garden had been the past three years.

It needed a lot of cleanup.

Then my husband built me these wonderful raised bed boxes…

…that my son’s seemed intent on quality checking before they were put to use.

I start digging and leveling.

And next for the (perforated) ground cover and gravel. That was a heavy job, wheelbarrow by wheelbarrow.

I didn’t appreciate how much work goes into the rock part of any garden until I did this.

Cameron, my five year old, wants to help stomp the gravel down.

More quality assurance checks. Both Dominic (my seven year old) and Cameron took this very seriously.

And now they are playing in the dirt! Nah, they just wanted to help as much as they could.

And they were really quite helpful too.

And the hard work paid off.

The nearly completed results. (Still have to tidy up and finish fixing the fence.)

It has come to a stop for now. We are finishing an addition on the house as well, so the fence will wait until next year. I have to say I am so happy with my garden now though. I want to put a bird bath in one corner, and a little bench in the other. Then I can sit out and enjoy looking at all the lush green, and watch the birds and the bees.
I hope you enjoyed looking at my journey to a lovely veggie garden. My next blog will be showing you my garden beds, and their progression. They are not as finished as my veggie garden, but well on their way. (And my hubby has promised a greenhouse either this fall, or next spring…I’m very excited!)

Thank you all. It has been great and I feel so good being back out to plant and weed. My back gardens are only half finished, so they seem to have been taken over by weeds in my absence. I intend to have the boys out pulling them very soon. (Nothing gets done around here without a woman's direction!)
--No Ian, you can't borrow him, he's still busy adding a much needed bedroom on the house. I know what I just said, and he does need my direction, but nothing gets done around here without my husband to build it either.
--Sandra, I can't take any credit for the hedges in the background. They are very nice indeed, but they belong to my neighbour, and they were here long before we bought here.

What a lot of hard work! I'm glad you've been taking 'before' and 'after' photos - it's such a good record for you, and interesting for us. I'm looking forward to the flowers, now!
