Pergola

I have a pergola in my back garden which has a Rambling Rector on it.
Has anybody ever put a roof on their pergola.
The material I thought of would have to clear to let the light in. Any ideas would be greatly received.

We have just bought some polycarbonate sheets to go in ours! It’ll let the sun through!

The rose is stunning and may well cover all your pergola before long.

We have a Grapevine on a pergola, the roof is covered with polycarbonate and was installed in 2010, still looks good with no cracks or splits.

Polycarbonate, that's the stuff, but for the life of me I couldn't remember its name lol!

Thank you for your advice and suggestions. They are very helpful.
The rose on the pergola originally covered the pergola but we decided to remove it but luckily we didn’t get the root. out out so now to make it more manageable for me I prune it so it only a pillar.

Our pergola is covered in a sheet of Willow which casts attractive shadows. Bought in a roll from a GC.

Hi Marjories, you could try the kind of roof found on some conservatories...the one on our last home was of that kind...but a word of warning, when it rains, even lightly, it can be noisey.
