A Visit to an Acer Nursery.

The day started with a visit to the local tip where we gladly said goodbye to items that had been hanging around for awhile.
My OH promised to buy me a new Acer as an anniversary present (which isn’t until August really).
The Howle Hill Nursery is near Ross on Wye,Herefordshire. Our journey took us down very twisty,narrow lanes often meeting large agricultural vehicles.
On arrival we weren’t 😞 disappointed….the Acer glade was magical with many different sizes.

I fell in love with Acer shirasawanum Aureum….the ones I have are all finely lobed so for a change I chose a broader leaved one.The leaves are yellow to lime with a very thin red edging . It’s a compact,rounded Maple ideal for small gardens and containers.
The owners were very helpful…I found out that the very finely lobed leaved Acers are much more sensitive to extreme weather conditions.

We travelled on to Leaf Creative at Huntley to find a suitable pot.
I was advised to choose a pot twice the size of the Acer’s root ball but to leave it in its original plastic pot sitting on crocks.Next Spring it will require repotting into the new pot.They are averse to sitting in wet compost.
