Years ago there was a village called 'Old Sturbridge Village', it was full of the old settler houses, and plenty of New England charm. I paid a visit there and was fascinated by their style of dress and their way of living. If it's still there it may be worth a visit......

I haven't heard back from my sister yet (she's in Florida on Sanibel Island at the moment), but Harkness Memorial State Park is in Waterford. There's also the Hartford arboretum and the Bartlett Arboretum in Stamford.
