A sad day in Central Texas...

Last weekend, my wife and I drove 45 minutes down to Killeen, TX to adopt little Mystic’s baby brother:

He is a beautiful little gray hair cat and we had named him Smokey!
This weekend early Sunday morning there was a fire at the shelter where we adopted our babies.. It was the most tragic thing that I have ever seen..
This video on one of our local TV stations covers the horror of what happened. It is absolutely heartbreaking! When we first visited the shelter and found Mystic, I had held, petted, rubbed, and caressed each and every one of the cats, both young and old before deciding on our little baby and the thought of all of the other loving cats going through such a horrific and painful death just breaks my heart…..
The “cat room #2” that little Smokey was in was completely gutted by the fire and we are SO glad the we decided to adopt him!! He is our special “miracle baby” that was adopted only one week before the fire. This is little Smokey relaxing on the couch in his new home:

He is just beautiful!

Thank goodness you had already got your two babies. Heart wrenching to think of the others dying in this way.

As I gathered more information on what happened, a few things made me feel somewhat better. I had pictured an inferno with those poor animals being burned alive in their cages.
This was not the case. An electrical short in the staff kitchen apparently started a very slow spreading fire that gave off a lot of smoldering smoke and carbon monoxide that put most of the animals to sleep long before the flames raged in the building...
It is still a horrible thing that happened, but I feel SO much better knowing that most of those precious creatures had already passed before the flames engulfed the rooms...
I am SO thankful that my wife and I decided, on the spur of the moment, the Sunday before, to adopt little "Smokey"..
God was on our side and I cannot explain it...
--> N2 feeling very humbled.

Although still very very sad its better to know the above and that the smoke had got to them first.

The most amazing thing that happened out of this tragedy was the amount of volunteers from all walks of life that showed up at the shelter to help afterward!
People showed up to help clean up, help to walk the dogs, anything that they could do for the shelter! The community response was overwhelming.. Contractors volunteered for free to help rebuild, donations went through the roof from all over Central Texas and the shelter was back in business after only ONE WEEK, rebuilt, refurbished, and better than ever!

It humbles me to see how all of these people from the surrounding areas came together to help the orphaned animals and the great people that care for them.. Quite amazing.. {watering eyes}

I echo your sentiments exactly N2, including the tears in eyes.
