Storm Damage !

Well it’s been a while since I was on here but I have made good use of my time. I’ve decorated my lounge during Jan so one job less to do.
I apologize for some of the pics being on their sides – I’ve no idea why as they are the correct way around on my laptop.

18/11/15 Storm Barney arrived during the night – couldn’t make out what I was seeing when I opened my bedroom curtains. When I realized what was wrong I was shocked ! My Sumac was laying across my patio, & my arch was leaning too, I guess that the weight of the Montana that was growing beautifully through the branches must have contributed to the uprooting of it. The strong winds that were still blowing were whipping the branches about & the main trunk was resting on the back of my old bench. I had to get out to sort it asap. After breakfast armed with my trusty old pruning saw & well wrapped up against the elements I made a start cutting out the Montana & the smaller branches to try to stop as much movement as possible.

This is the Sumac 20/06/15

I managed to remove the main branches leaving just the 3 largest ones coming from the trunk. I propped one of them on my old stepladder and another on the metal back of the bench ( by this time the weight had broken 2 of the back slats ).

29/11/15
My grand daughter’s boyfriend came round & removed the remainder of the tree & took it all away for me.

This is how it looks now minus the arch which had quite a bit of rot. Alf the Elf is now in place of the tree ( a Christmas gift from 2 of my Grandchildren ) . A new metal arch is on the cards & I can’t wait to get on & sort out the rest of it. Roll on Spring !!

What a shame! Still, it's a good opportunity to have something new in it's place. Glad no one got hurt!

You poor soul, what a nasty shock that must have been. That little area in the first picture looks so perfect. Lets hope Alf can protect his new home against further damage!

OMG, some wild storm. We can have them on the Island as well. Hope you will not get one like this for a long time. You are doing well restoring the area.

I've given you a like as recognition for the work gone into putting it right Nan, it must have given you a right ole start when you first looked out, Alf looks happy in his new space and all seems to be in order now, we've had some really high winds of late and I think some of us have to count ourselves lucky as regards damage, fingers xx we get through March without the high winds returning....

Well Nancy, I can just imagine your shock and confusion when you opened your curtains that morning! But you've made a great job of the clear up, and you have a fine statue now. Your garden is lovely and will be back looking wonderful in no time! :) i do love a good courtyard garden. :)

Thanks CK , It was a relief to get it tidied a bit as I can't bear things 'not right' . At the moment to me it looks a mess & I need to move plants that are in the wrong place, although they look alright in the Summer when everything is growing but I just can't get my head around where they should go ! I must put my 'thinking cap ' on. lol

Nancy, you sound just like me! :)

This might sound crazy, but I prefer the space without that tree. It now seems to be brighter, more open & less cluttered. You found just the right place for Alf the elf.

Ha ha CK , I'm the same indoors too !
Bathgate, the garden is really open & light now & I'm sure a lot of things will benefit for it. I expect it will look a lot better when the leaves start to come out & it won't look so bare. The tree had been there for so many years but I do love Alf :-)

The plants will respond positively from the increase light and airflow. You also have better light to read.

Such I shock when something like this happens but you have sorted it so quickly. I do like Alf and he looks very comfortable in that spot :)
