i have done sculpture, pottery, tattoos and drawing art wise in my life.i was given an eisel and some water colour paints in a nice box by two different people.i thaught about it a while and thaught it was only right that i use them so i just started an art evening class last week.when i got there i realised the teacher ,a man called john has had a stroke and all the people there have bean there a while and capable of getting on on there own.id taken a picture of my faverite flower that was growing in my garden last year.id baught a proper water colour canvas to.my friend who i took told me a few things but had his own picture to paint.i did my best and didnt like it at all after the first to hour session.i went back tonight and finished it.i didnt like it again after 4 hours either standing close to it.try not to laugh when you see it but the more i look at it the more i like it a bit and im liking it more at a distance squinting my eyes lol.its on a canvas 18″ × 24″ . im just wondering weather to give up painting or carry on and just wanted to know what you people think.i like asking you as you answer me honestly.please dont hold back and be brutally honest.i think ill keep it as its my first ever water colour like i said and maybe my last.
ive bean working on an orangutan for quite a while now.i just havnt had the urge to finish it.i suffer from that sad i believe but thats my problem.the orang wasnt and isnt for anybody i just liked it and fancied drawing it.i started it well before xmas .probably bean doing it 6 months or so.it was nearly finished just needed a couple of hours spent on it realy. skillen from on here commissioned me to draw her friends scottish deer hound on the sly as she had done something nice for her.she did some covert photography and sent me some pictures though that was a mission in itself but thats another story lol i have them now.anyway meantime the dog took a bit of a turn for the worse with a heart problem on top of the probs getting the photos.anyway on a chearier note the vet gave the dog some pills and hes back to his normal self.the dog picture and walking my dogs and my friends with them yesterday in the lovley forest we are lucky enough to have near us on a lovley spring day gave me the kick up the bum i needed to finish the orangutan which i did.im very pleased with it actualy.i made up most of the leaves in the background as the origional was boring.we were walking 9 dogs without a problem,3 adults and 3 little nippers. ive never bean in such a big wonderfull pack.it was great.anyway i hope you like the finished item and the dog that im starting real soon.ill like i do keep you filled in on how the dog turns out ok.
we took nine dogs .mine were my american bulldog x staffy called merkin , my sharpei whos hopefully pregnant cant weight to see the little wrinkly pups .again you know me ill keep you updated ,my 3 quarter pug x chiwowa and last but not least my little pure pug .my friend had her english bulldog that she mated the same days as i mated my sharpei,a french bulldog,a shitzu and 2 pure pugs .i got my pug of of them .heres my 4 i took.i didnt take jerry my 11 year old spanail as if another dog gets in his space he gets agressive so it wasnt worth the risk.they look brilliant all running as a pack and all well behaved.anyway like i say i hope you enjoy take care bye for now .

NP you've started at the top with the most difficult subjects. You've clearly got talent so stick with it. You've done a brilliant job of the Orangutan, those eyes. I like the photo of the five dogs.

maybe acrylic as you can water it down to tranparent but also put on thick and even add 'texture paste' it dries quickly - not like oil-but sometimes too quickly so you can add a clear gel to slow the drying--- see I can' talk the talk' but find it much harder to ' walk the walk', I enjoy experimenting with different medium, some at my class do wonderful things using a combination of medium such as watercolour and pastel or a delicate watercolour but a little acrylic on the top such as people in a landscape which I find hard in a landscape what to do first the background or the people -- either way I seem to get a 'halo' of whitr around them and it doesn't look natural. watercolours lovely for delicate flowers like poppies where you can almost see through them, frustrating -- but great fun :o)

thanx for that pamq i will keep up the experimenting and if it goes wrong its all your fault lol.anyway take care bye for now xx

Well Leigh, you know I like your pictures lol ! Will you put a photo of the finished and framed orangutan on here - would love to see it. Are you going to keep it?
I do like your watercolour, but I think it would look better with the flower more of a purpley colour. Any news on sausage yet? xx

hello skillen how are you ? yes i will put a picture of the orangutan up and know i just drew it as i have a real love of orangs but no i will sell it if someone wants it as it goes.im running out of space in my house . i only keep pictures that are personal to me or i would have hundreds of them lol .i thaught the water colour was ok but alright for first try ever i thaught but yes it could of been a lot better.i mite try oils see how much i can mess them up lol .as for sausage i think she is as shes acting different but realy hard to tell at 2-3 weeks after mating.i will keep you updated so dont worry lol.take care bye for now xx .

I'm fine, looking forward to seeing your finished orangutan. I do like the watercolour, I think it is a great outcome for your first go,and I'm sure if you tried oils it would be just as good if not better.

and you paint as well, excellant paintings. you don't write poetry as well do you only i'm worried i might be you. oils are good to work with but take an age to dry out. and also i agree working with water colours is a lot more difficult than acrylics. maybe i'll show some of mine when i get more used to all of this. and i also agree when people say they can't draw or paint i think it's just that they haven't yet found thier way into the field as it were :)

your right april most things that you get better at are because of the eage to want to and bearing that in mind most people can better thereselves if they realy want to and that goes for lots of things.id love to see your work.ive an email addy at noseypotter41@hotmail.com if that makes it any easier.as for me im not interested enough to do the painting at all so this is my first and last atempt.ill stick with pastel, watercolour pencil, sculpting and glass paint i think. it was interesting just to know that its not an avenue im happy with lol if that makes any sense .

I think your painting was pretty darn good for a first attempt. I find watercolours quite hard as it goes. I think it's really bad that they didn't start you off from the beginning with the watercolours.
I think you'd enjoy working with oils as I find they're rather like pastels in the way you use them. I tend to work wet on wet with oils and do lots of blending of the wet colours in the canvess - the possibilities are endless and (unlike watercolours) if you make a mistake you can get a knife and just scrape the colour off adn start again! The down side of oils is that there are some nasty chemicals involved and the materials are a bit pricey. When I was learning I just painted onto cardboard primed with PVC instead of wasting canvasses. Paints are cheaper on line.

thanx sid makes a lot of sense but bye nature im terrible with money for a start and i am messy as anything secondly.i believe if i used oils i would be more painted than the canvas lol .this is why the pastels and pencils are so forgiving wear im concerned but thanx anyway xx .

Yes, I think pastels are defo your medium :-)

I go to art classes and its amazing the wealth of talent there, I'm nowere near as good as you I think your oranutan is wonderful butwatercolour is different, you've used it in such a vibrant way, often its ligher, more transparent and delicate, i'm doing a collage of butterfly wings at the moment--- partly with a fine black pen and a 00 brush!-- the trouble with watercolur ( and there are many!) is that its almost impossible to correct mistakes-- its difficult to cover them up without it going 'muddy' and --almost-- impossible to remove. but you are using them in a wonderfully dramatic way so I suggest you keep going back to them or using them in mixed media bests wishes PG
