the courtyard...

the contractors are finally finished, and now all i have to do is fill and plant up these big beds! i’m pleased with my design, and really glad i stayed with the pink slabs…the glare is a lot less, easier on my eyes…the hedge looks so much better now that the raised beds hide all the rabbit runs, and the little patio actually LOOKS like a patio..i was concerned about loosing privacy when i had to take out the forcithia [sp?] bushes, but it has turned out to be a great place to chat with passerbys..very pleasant, and i do have privacy around the corner of the shed…i plan on filling the beds with plastic bottles, covering that with garden fabric, sinking big empty pots in there, covering the fabric with mulch, then dropping planted containers in the big pots…here’s hoping it all works out…the privacy will increase as the hedge grows..i don’t plan on trimming it for the next few years…just wanted to share the new design, and thank those of you who understood and supported me when i had to take out all my other, newly planted garden…this little courtyard is going to be just fine…already had many compliments, even though it’s not planted yet! i’ll have to watch out that i don’t get a swelled head LOL….

that is going to be so easy for you to maintain, great heights too, lovely structure, now what are you planting in them?

thanks, Oliveoil, i'm not sure yet, but i'm aiming for hummingbird-pleasing plants...any suggestions? i'm guessing it will take about 9 good-sized pots to look good in the beds...got any suggestions? i might try one or two perennials, fill the rest with annuals until i see if the plastic bottles provide enough insulation to overwinter the plants..

thanks, Scotkat...it's turned out better than i had hoped for, and now i have the fun of a different kind of garden..i think!..i picture something a bit more formal than the ramp beds, altho' gardens have a way of doing their own thing, don't they?

thanks, Linda.....i'm really fortunate to have a contractor who listens to me, and has the ability to build whatever i come up with...he hasn't been stumped yet, thank goodness...

It's really nicely done. I love the wooden raised beds, and the slabs fit in well with the design too :)

thanks, Hywel...it's such a relief to have the decision made, and the contractor's work finished...this past spring was stressful, and i'm glad that's behind me...there is still one spot that annoyed me..i don't like the view, but i'm trying to come up with something to block it...an umbrella would do the trick, but i prefer some kind of plant...perhaps clematis will do the trick...one thing about the slabs..it's a lot safer for me with that open area...i did trip at times with my narrow paths...

I'm glad the slabs are better for you to walk on. Paths need to be wide.
