Hostas

Growing Hostas from seed is not as difficult as you might think. I collect seed at the end of the season, flowering hostas provide a good source. I plant in the spring in a cold greenhouse and after a few weeks they come through. When two leaves appear I plant into 3 inch pots and when the weather starts to warm up place them in a shaded position (just like typical hosta growing conditions). If they need potting on again I do so, then come September they go back in the greenhouse for their first winter. The leaves die off (I always take these away as dead leaves can lead to mites and unwanted insects) and then leave them. Nothing appears above the soil and they just lie dormant. Once March arrives the hostas start to shoot and in a couple of months they will be planted out in their rightful place, but for the second year I still keep them in pots until they get really established, if larger then they are planted direct into the ground. At the end of this their second year they will stay outside. Not sure if this is how the “experts” do it, but it works for me.

Added this to my 'favourites' so I can refer to it again - I've been trying to grow Hostas from seed for years and never succeeded. I'll keep trying!

Didn't know you could grow them from seed. I tend to just divide mine (with a spade!)
