Before and After this is what happens when cricket is rained off!!

Rain affected my fun for this weekend (cricket match cancelled) so decided to take the bull by the horns on Sunday and start the re-vamp of the middle pathway, to try to form a new rose border and climbing rose frame. I think it is a big improvement – what do you guys think to it!

The Before Pictures:

And now the After Pictures:

This is the support structure for the trellis

It was hard work to dig out the grass as the ground is so hard and very very dry still.

Now the trellis has been put in place, all that remains to be done is choosing which colour and how many roses can be squeezed into the border and trellis.

It was hard work but I hope you agree a dig worth doing.

Great trellis work Mum and super neat edging too. What happens at the bit of grass on the right...is that where you have a seat? I wonder if in the future you will end up taking all the grass up and just having gravel pathways...no mowing!

Wow Oliveoil it looks Brill, It gives some height at that end of your garden and its a great design, even if you didnt grow plants up it, it still looks Brill :))) I love it..

So beautiful Oliveoil, you have done a great job there, so neat and tidy, I wonder if a trip to the GC is planned now!

Just spotted the cat planter.....very cute and cheerful!

Michaella, o h and I did it on Sunday, it was hard work, knocking down the posts, the ground is rock hard really rock hard up there. Hubby knocked them in I just instructed and held them straight. Glad you like it.

Karen the bit of grass leads to the slabbed area into where the new seat is, thought it would look better with a bit left in leading onto the slabs rather than a step down onto soil. Will never take it all out, like a bit of green, not keen on gravel pathways.

Youngdaisydee, so glad you like it, you are right of course, that is the effect I was after, height was needed it was so flat up there. I shall plant climbing roses up it and I am hoping to get a Trapoleum Speciosum at some point also.

Grandmage thank you it does look better - not going to GC just now though, going to buy roses, made a list but need to look at them on line first before the list is finalised. I had some Hellebores potted up from seedlings that were growing under the parent plant so put some of those in up there this evening and moved some potted geraniums and fuschias up just to take away the bareness.

looks great Oliveoil. you have been busy.

Happy choosing!!

He is nice my cat Karen, he is sat on a bench I concocted from breeze blocks and planks of wood from an old wooden bench, my recycling skills. I hate throwing useful things away. Still got to get the raised bed filled up with cabbage plants and cauliflowers, Paul has set the seeds at work in one of the allotments behind the tea rooms. Hopefully they will be in place soon.

Thank you Sandra and Grandmage I planned it ages ago, just needed the o h to get the muscles out and knock the supports in, too much for me to do. I can dig grass out but not knock in posts. I knocked in a post the other week and my hand is still sore from jarring it. Getting old I know!!!!!

Beautiful before Olive, but more beautiful now....I love your garden...:>)

Oh thank you Moti, pleased you like it.

Wow Olive you did work hard and the end result is grand, the trellis adds just the right touch and it will be lovely to look at when it has the roses growing up, are you after any particular colour.
You have a lovely garden anyway, even before the changes, the sort of garden one has to meander around to discover its secrets....

I am thinking red for the climbers but not sure about which colours for the border Linclass. Going to go for the shorter rose bushes for the border because they are at the front and I do not want anything to grow too far over the path now I have cut it out. I shall get moaned at if it becomes overgrown. lol. :O)

If your gett'n a red rose Oliveoil, you have to make a hot border down there :))) yellows and oranges and reds, Hot Hot Hot lol...
Just googled Trapoleum, Flame flower! its beautifull. watch out for those slugs..

A very nice job indeed Oliveoil & OH. A new planting opportunity is always worth the effort. ;-))

I agree Muddy, but just added up the cost of the roses and think I might be saving up for a long while yet! lol. Will be buying in small bundles rather than all in one go. lol. The pension doesn't stretch far. lol. Shall have to keep my fingers out of the purse for a while and not go off visiting any g.c. either. lol.

I agree Lincslass, they definitely were!!

I love the way you've done your garden and the path which must take ages to cut round all the slabs. You must have alot of patience.Looking forward to seeing all the roses in it.

Definitely a dig worth doing Oliveoil ... I really love your garden too! : o ))

Hi Rose, all the slabs are below the height of the mower so I just cut over them, it is easy peasy. The only thing with slabs in the grass is that every spring it takes ages to get around and trim off the excess which has grown over, but only do it once a year so not really an issue. Hope you are enjoying your garden and not getting too much rain.

20 Jul, 2011

I love how it has given it height Shirley at the top of the garden, so pleased with it. Only need to buy the roses now to climb up the trellis.

20 Jul, 2011

Went back for another look Olive.I do love your garden.I have just noticed the way you have shaped the grass in your path with the small pieces jutting out. Is that to separate your borders?Looking forward to seeing it completely finished and planted up.

21 Jul, 2011

Yes Rose it leads to the pathway with the new metal seat on it, a bit of a step down onto a slab and then the walkway up to the seat, actually think I have posted a picture on my photos you would probably get a better view of it from that photo. I only left it because I hadn't got another slab to slot in so decided to leave a bit stuck out so that I could still walk down on to the pathway. Hope that is as clear as mud lol. :o0) look at the pictures sure you will see what I am waffling on about. lol. :o)

I'm a bit late finding this, but it looks lovely! Have you planted your roses in yet?

12 Aug, 2011

Better late than never Jennyfer, glad you like it. Roses not planted yet, not ordering until October (bare root) have a list though as long as your arm. lol. will have to get saving now. lol. Hope you and yours are all fit and well and enjoying whatever this summer has thrown at you in your garden. Best wishes.

12 Aug, 2011

Thanks Olive, I wish the same for you :) Bet you'll have tons of fun choosing them! I have the opposite problem of having grown loads of plants, but not yet cleared enough space for them :P

15 Aug, 2011

How much longer are you on holiday for, will you manage to get them in before going back to Uni. Hopefully you will weather permitting. I have chosen my roses now so just a matter of waiting and saving and then waiting to get them in when they arrive. seems to be a lot of waiting there. lol. patience is a virtue eh!!

15 Aug, 2011

ahh, but they'll be lovely when you do get them in, so a wait worth waiting! I don't officially start term till the first week in october (i think!), but will be moving up to settle into the flat before then..... last I looked I had holiday stretching out all around me, now I seem to have blinked and its gone! (my mother did warn me about this...).
So I don't know whether I will get it all in or not... its more a need to clear space, but it seems to be an awkward time of year to do it (with half the weeds seeming taller than me!), but I also put everything in the wrong place last year, so need to move it all around again... when would be the best time for doing this?
Half of what I read says spring, the other half autumn... but then I wouldn't know when in autumn... Monty Don was saying that now is a good time, but not everything has finished flowering :/

Good luck with your patience game (and the saving!)

Thanks Jennyfer, I think if you weed early on in the year it seems to keep weed free for longer. BUT If you have a lot that are now overgrown and self seeding I would do it now, that way you can eliminate some of the self-seeding weeds setting in the border. Then again in Spring would really do the trick, it is hard work at first but eventually you do get on top of it and the trick is to do it all before they seed.
Hope that makes sense that is how I did mine and it now only really needs weeding once in springtime. You do still get some stuff poking up because the weed seeds lie dormant for a number of years and then when the conditions are right for them to grow off they go. But it is up to you really as to when you do it all, time is of the most importance with your UNI course and if you are not able to do it then your course must come first. Sound like your mother now don't I lol. but I know what you mean about the time flying by. It is just ridiculous where has the summer gone to. lol. You have lots of holiday left yet, hope you are managing to enjoy your well deserved break. Best wishes Barbara (Oliveoil)

Thanks Barbara,
weeding definitely is easier in spring... but I see what you mean about the self-seeding weeds, so I will have a go at it (if i don't all the poor plants I have growing on won't have anywhere to go!). What I really wanted to know is when to move my plants (the ones I want still, just in a different place). Luckily at Uni I am away from gardening temptation (but not from day-dreaming). It did cause a bit of a last year when I was still in college though :P
Kind regards, Jen.
