this is what it looked like before the gardener got to work on this patch of grass, well grass is such a pain, it has to be fed, watered and cut on a regular basis!! So I decided to take out some more and this is the outcome!
First of all I marked out the shape to mimic the outer edge of the grass and border:
Then I took out the middle slab and chopped out the grass:
I then dug the plot,
the only thing left to do now is to plant up – it was going to be an ornamental water area, but I discussed with OH and he preferred roses so roses it is:
Think a standard rose in the middle, and four other bush roses or shrub roses in each corner and filled in with Heucheras or similar. Not quite sure yet or what colour roses to use but I am pleased with efforts today. Just need to trim the grass path around it now and then off to the garden centre tomorrow to see what I can find, that is if I have enough diesel in my car.

With such a formal shape I think it would look great with Buxus round the edges. Would provide a nice frame for the roses.

Thank you Cinderella, I have been very busy, did some housework first though, just to show willing. lol. I don't mine my bits of grass that are left in the garden. It was more or less a field not that many years ago, it just had to disappear.
Andip thank you for your idea - do not think it is big enough to take buxus though, it is not that large a border/bed. and of course I would have to trim it and that is a no no for me. I should soon get bored with it. I shall have to put some sort of support around the edge (think a wood edge pushed down to the level of the grass) just to stop it being broken up.
Thanks again guys for your comments.

I like the way you have done that Olive, it will be lovely with roses in it and think of the perfume when walking by, I always threaten my lawns especially down the bottom of the garden as it doesn`t really do very well, its on clay and very shady for most of the day so I get a lot of moss, trouble is I actually like it, I find walking around with the mower very good for my frame of mind, especially the walk back to the shed when all is neat and tidy again, lol...
Will be checking to see what you choose at the garden centre, hope you don`t have to walk, we topped our tank up yesterday but its for hubby to get to work and back again, he travels 140miles daily, I think the easter hols will be spent walking the dogs this year....

I know it is such a pain having to queue for fuel. I haven't been anywhere all week, do not like wasting what I have in the tank at the minute, hate queuing for diesel. I am on clay soil too, with moss everywhere, suppose we should not complain as the clay soil retains the moisture so much better and if this hosepipe ban stays on for a long while we shall be grateful of clay soil.
Thanks for looking at my blog enjoy your garden.

Very wise decision you have taken Oliveoil. Big lawns are only useful for the cricket grounds. I too had to queue for petrol yesterday, but today, at least in my area, the situation is back to normal and haven't seen any queues at the filling stations.

Looks great Olive and like Sticki I thought ah a rose bed.
Lavender is always a good companion plant with roses and very little trouble. It will look good whatever you decide.

OOOOer that is an idea Stroller thank you! :o)
Yes Costas definitely best for cricket grounds, which I shall be visiting every weekend very shortly. Yay!!!!! cricket season starts in two weeks. Come on the Boys!!

thank you Sheilar, Scotkat, Scottish and Michaella, it was good digging too, the ground was nice and damp which I was not expecting, I think the previous tennant filled this area level with compost many years ago. So it is not as clay as the rest of the garden. But after saying that it was very damp and that was a big surprise after March not having had any rain. Roses it is but do not know if I shall make it to the g c today as the diesel stocks are about depleted in our area. Off to see if there is any at the garage this morning, I am not touring round if there is none at my local garage that will be a no no for me as I am supposed to be going out for a meal tonight - meeting friends so do not want to miss that. Trying to conserve fuel as much as possible, NO WATER, NO FUEL, NO MONEY, lol what is the world coming to. lol. Good job they cannot take my garden from me. lol. Happy Gardening everyone thanks again for looking in. - B

Michaella I ran out of Cuprinol so had to do something didn't I, only two chairs left to go now.

Ah, now I see where that rose bed came from! Was this your 'secret' project you didn't want to tell OH about? lol...lovely! Water would also have been very nice.
1 Apr, 2012
plenty of grass at Sam's house I believe! ;)))

Welcome home, glad you are back safe and sound. Nope this is not the secret project this came to mind after seeing a picture on goy of a water garden and I thought I could have a go but as the project got underway I thought it would be a better rose garden, the secret project is no longer secret I spilled the beans to Paul, still saving up to buy the corner arbor seat for that one. lol. Will take me a long while especially as I keep spending on roses for other areas. lol. what am I like, it does look nice though.
Off to cut the grass on Thursday at Sams she is on hols for easter, thinking of staying over for a couple of days so we shall do some shopping and eating etc. think Sarah is going up also for the day so we shall have fun I am sure. Not sure whether I shall stay there or not, they only have one bedroom done so Gareth would have to go back to his mums for a night or so. lol. xxxxx

Hmmm...tent? ;) That's really funny about the water feature because I had been planning to do my pond that shape! Still haven't decided for sure...think I will need to have a solid liner, but I could get a circular one and just lay sleepers over the edge in that shape.....not sure..think a natural shape might be better, but I was thinking about tying in with the gravel seating areas which are both octagonal shaped. What do you think?
1 Apr, 2012
This was going to be oblong and then I marked it out in an octagon and liked it soo much that I changed my mind completely, the border was shaped the same way and I thought it would look better like this, not sure what to tell you about yours because it is difficult to make a decision not knowing where abouts in relation to the seating area and your greenhouse etc. they are both that shape aren't they, ponds for fish look better natural but I think if it is just ornamental/bog garden any formal shape is better. I need some small plants now to fill in the gaps on this latest rose bed. Paul chose the roses, lol, supposedly highly perfumed, it was quite funny having him with me at the gc I warned him in advance not to moan about money or the price of stuff and that kept him quite for a while. Bless he has no idea how much stuff costs. I managed to get through the till without him knowing how much I had paid - I sent him for an ice cream. lol.

Nice tactics! I know, Scott is much younger and has lost touch completely with the price of stuff. He considers buying shoes etc. then comes and says to me, "is that 'normal' price?". It happened on holiday because he forgot to pack sandals so we had to buy new ones and they were about £50...he was scandalised! lol...However, he never seems to complain at all about the cost of golf clubs or balls.....funny that eh? ;))
2 Apr, 2012
yes Paul is like that with his shooting - the price of cartridges is outrageous. I had forgotten will keep that one up my sleeve for the next time he moans. lol. Paul still thinks I can go to Morrisons and do my shopping for £40 lol. oh dear what are they like, a good joint of beef cost that these days, not that I buy them. lol.
2 Apr, 2012
lol....blessem! £40 doesn't even get you a good basket full these days!
2 Apr, 2012
Never mind a basket Paul still thought you could fill a trolley for that price. lol what are they like!!

I love the way this thread has gone ... from the shape of the new Rose bed ... to the price of fuel and groceries ... lol! ... I think the shape you have created is just right, Barbara ... and it's going to look lovely in the Summer with the Roses in bloom ... well done! ... :o)

Thank you Shirley, it looks good now it is all planted up just wish I could keep the darned rabbit out, he/she keeps trimming up the new shoots on the rose bushes, we have fenced even higher but think now he might be living inside the garden and we will have to do some searching to find his hidey hole. As I told Karen he is probably into Pole vaulting but after we have netted up to four foot think he is less active than that. We are quite at a loss to see where he is getting in so think he must have a hole somewhere under some bushes. I will get the little B.....!!!!
11 Apr, 2012
ps sorry rabbit lovers, I love my expensive roses too much to let him have a run in my garden.
11 Apr, 2012
Now I'm smiling at the image of a pole vaulting rabbit ... but I'm sure it's very annoying for you to have one in your garden ... good luck in your search! ... :o)
11 Apr, 2012
Well it is Olympic year isn't it Shirley he might be practising. lol :o) bad bunnie.

My word, you have been busy Oliveoil. We are all getting a burst of energy now aren't we ! It looks good and will look even better when planted. Well done. I don't blame you for getting rid of the grass. I keep threatening mine, and I haven't got much as it is, but I do like to see a bit of grass.
