Learning something new is NOT easy!

New computer, laptop, which I hate, cos the keyboard is not raised and I have trouble touch typing with it being so flat, mainly because my fingers are so large. lol

New operating system, Windows 8, ouch how on earth do I get used to it!? lol Everything is so different, I have been trying to download my e.mails this past two days, only to be defeated, then I find out that the whole system for retrieving BT e.mails is down, so no wonder it isn’t working for me. lol. Patience has been tested sorely for two days, then I thought I should ring BT to see why I was not able to get my e.mails and a recorded message then told me it is a problem which they hope to have resolved by 3pm today. lol. and I thought I had completely lost it. lol.

I am getting there with the keyboard but only slowly. Maybe one day I shall be as happy with it all as I was with my old system and computer. The only saving grace I have with the new laptop is I can log on and sit in front of the log fire in winter and be nice and cosy.

I have missed out on loads of things while I have been computerless, but am not going to try and catch up as I am still knitting baby clothes and its getting ever closer to Baby Pink’s arrival.

Just thought I would let you all know why I have been missing in action for so long. I have been trying to keep up but it is so slow, no to put it correctly, I AM so slow at learning new things, old age again lol.

After typing out this blog I find that the fingers are getting used to the keyboard afterall. lol. Happy Gardening when you are able. I am off to buy a HOW TO DO/WORK WITH WINDOWS 8. lol

You'll soon get the hang of it Mum, I hated Windows 8 when we got the new laptop as well. Luckily I still have slightly raised keyboard, but once you get the hang of the 'Windows Key' you're off and running. We had that same problem with BT recently...the recorded message. Ours was down all day and we didn't get back on line until tea time. Keep at it!! :)) I'm sure you are doing a lot better than you give yourself credit for :) x

Oh no Michaella! what a nuisance (was going to put something rude, but resisted!).

I posted your Severn Sunrise this morning Barbara - hope that will cheer you up a bit. Good luck with the Windows 8 - I do wish they wouldn't keep fixing things that ain't broke.

Micky - that will take a bit of getting used to!

thank you everyone for your encouraging messages, I am playing about with things and learning as I go along, but it is slow work. lol.

Micky sorry you lost all your settings, its a darned
nuisance to say nothing of the frustration when learning how to navigate around a new system. The hardest thing I am finding at the minute is the way that the screen switches from smaller to larger screens without I know how and I have to keep resetting things back to 100% view, I shall get there I am sure eventually, probably will have to go and get a hair colour before I master it completely, I am going greyer by the minute with all the angst - hope I haven'g got a blood pressure check up soon lol. it could be sky high lol.

thank you Stera for the heads up will watch out for a parcel thank you so much for remembering them. xx hope you are well. B

Go , Olive !
You'll do it , and put me to shame ; I'm an unfortunate technophobe .

still no e.mails, getting very frustrated. lol. wish bt would get their act together. Driad, I was ok with the old system, just so different this Windows 8. Need the manual now, got one coming to help me from a friend so should soon be up and running. Have mastered some of it - the Charms were the most puzzling for me until I realised they were set up for each individual page and had settings to adjust for each different page visited if needed. lol. thought it was magic when I read the word Charm, well I am thinking it might still be magic. lol.

I don't have a clue what charms are!

Oh Barbara, I do sympathise. I also have just got a new laptop with Windows 8. My last OS was Windows XP, so it's quite a leap. It's totally different, isn't it? Apparently it was originally designed for use with a touchscreen, so the basic design is a huge change. I've also just got an iPad for the first time, and I am picking that up much faster than the Windows. The only solution is to keep on using it. Eventually it sinks in - so they say! ?

LOL, I changed to Windows 8 last November on the advice of my hubby, according to him it was the best thing since sliced bread, HUH!, never going to listen to him ever again, it still winds me up at times, BTW, it is magic and does its own thing on a regular basis........

lol well thank goodness it isn't just me after all. lol. I have at least now got my e.mails back up again. but only on the bt website not on my desktop app. thank you both for being about as good as I am on the darned new system, its good to know I am not the only one technically challenged. We should start a club for computer challenged people. lol.

Hello Barbara, you are braver than me ! I am still with Windows 7 and hope I never have to change ! Well done you for having a go ! Its been a great summer, hasn't it ! x

2 Oct, 2014

Hi Rose, not brave at all, old computer absolutely packed up on me so no choice in it, had to have a new one. Yes its been a great summer, and this week has been a lovely one for being outside in the garden. Lots to clear up when I start but not doing anything yet, still lots of colour out in the borders and so I am still sitting out and enjoying what is still in flower. Hope you are both well and able to do some sitting outside too.

About touch typing, I noticed my GP does it, but still looks at the keys. Might help.

3 Oct, 2014

now that is something which the kids do too, they look while they type, but I was a typist in a large typing pool many years ago and old habits die hard Diane. I was trained not to look at the keys, now its implanted in my brain. It is all becoming easier the more I use the key board. Think it is just because it is not banked in any way and very flat and just needs the brain to get acclimatised to it.

Karen the charms are the things which keep jumping out at the side of the screen, if you move your cursor to the bottom right or top right corners of the screen a row of vertical tools appear. lol. well they do on my screen. lol, maybe it is just my laptop lol. and maybe it is just magic. lol

Ollie, I was the same as you, but we all have to learn to
adjust to modern technology.
I have been told Google change their tactics every week.
So just keep trying. (Touch typed.)

I am getting there now thanks Diane, just downloaded some pictures, not sure I have found all the controls for adjusting and editing things yet though. The older system was good so I think it will take a while to get used to the editing programmes on this new system. The keyboard is not as challenging as it was so I am sure I shall get the hang of it all eventually.

The charms always appear when the cursor goes to the corner, Barbara. It's their magic ?

Some of the things are actually much more straightforward than they used to be. It's just finding where everything is that I am not very good at!

3 Oct, 2014

Finding things is what used to frustrate me Melchi and to be truthful I still sometimes go all around the houses first.........

3 Oct, 2014

I know - I'm not using my PC for much these days, so I am not very good with it. Someone has given me a basic manual, so I might work my way through it - one day. I rather think that the best way to do it, though, is just to solve problems as and when they arise.

Hi Oliveoil, I use Windows Vista on a lap-top now 14 years old. (I hope I'm not tempting fate now lol) It also has a flat keyboard. I'm so used to the system that I dread a breakdown for good. I keep having the odd problems but I'm lucky enough to have a local chappie who keeps working wonders and I can only say he seems able to resurrect the dead lol! I think you're very clever managing to tackle not only a new computer but also a new system...I take my hat off to you :)

4 Oct, 2014

Waddy that is a good age for a computer. I liked Vista, missed it at first but now getting used to the keyboard and new system. Its just a matter of making myself use it and to keep trying to remember where everything is to alter things. Just hate change in things I have got used to, suppose its just my lazy brain not wanting to have to think things through again. lol.

I, too had to change. My new one whizzed all over the place until my clever children slowed it down... I notice that many people go quite fast without knowing how to touch type, so don't worry about the typing part. You are way ahead of the game. I do not know about the British children, but ours know the computer before they can hold a fork. It is, I suppose, like the telephone was for us.

that is the trouble with the computer, it does not think like us, but there are so many ways you can do the same thing. So just keep trying. Frustrating, even for the Gurus who come to help!!!

That is why we have our gardens, to forget all this stuff.

2 Jul, 2015

thanks Wells had it for over a year now and I have got used to it - more or less! As you say thank goodness for gardens so we can forget all about the computer. lol :O)

2 Jul, 2015

British children certainly know all about computers, Wells. They have no fear! No point in worrying about it (my mother-in-law remembered being told off for "wasting time" reading books.) and it is very useful having a little expert on hand!

Happy 4th July, by the way!
