BBC Gardener's World plant list - 17th April 2009

I’m quite pleased this week as after looking at other’s garden last week, I know I have one of the plants in my own this time :o) it’s a mixed blessing though, as although I have some photos, I know the plant succumbed to last year’s winter.

So, in this week’s show:

The two climbers that Toby was planting against the wall were:
Trachelospermum jasminoides (Star Jasmine)
Solanum laxum ‘Album’ (White potato vine)

The Star Jasmine is a popular one in GoY gardens and in the ‘Top of the Pots’, this week’s top climber ~ sorry :o) ~ is Spritzhenry who has both these plants (and fabulous pics) amongst nearly 700 plants!!

The plants that were featured at RHS Harlow Carr:
Rhododendron luteum which has only one photo!
Brunnera macrophylla which was recommended for blue colour in dappled shade.
Meconopsis x sheldonii (Blue poppy) which only features in Rydeboyz’ garden

Then we moved to RHS Hyde Hall:
Iris pallida subsp. pallida (Pale blue iris)
Echium pininana (Giant viper’s bugloss)

The plants that Toby planted in his evening garden:
Digitalis purpurea (Foxgloves) ‘excelsior mix’, ’Pam’s Choice’ and ‘Sraight up’
Hesperis matronalis ‘Albiflora’ (White sweet rocket)
Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’
Convulvulus cneorum (Silverbush)
Lavandula stoechas (French Lavender)
Eryngium variifolium (Sea holly)

A lot of these had silver foliage covered with hair which apparently makes them good for warm areas – the hairs help stop the wind around the leaves, keeping moisture in. I planted a French Lavender when I first gave my garden a makeover, the plant is no longer in my real garden but it lives on in my GoY garden.

The Gazania seedlings Toby was potting up in the money saving tips were:
Gazania ‘Christopher Lloyd’

And right and the end Carol and Toby got to chooose a plant of the moment, Toby chose Auriculas but I prefered Carol’s Giant wakerobin which was awesome – who’d have thought a plant would need to camouflage its leaves!? Unfortunately there’s no photos on GoY of that one (yet).

Primula auricula ‘Helen Barter’ (Green edged fancy auricula)
