Velvet Mite

It's almost that time of year when I'll start seeing Velvet Mites. They are tiny, 1/8" or 3-4 mm but still easily seen because of their bright red color. Adults live in moist woods on vegetation and in leaf litter. They eat certain insect eggs, which makes them beneficial. Larvae are external parasites of hosts...........they find a host such as insects, spiders, daddy-long-legs, and scorpions, and begin to feed. Nymphs and adults are predacious.
