Flower on unknown bush

Flower on unknown bush

This is the flower of an unknown bush we have in our garden. It always blooms about now and in a couple of weeks will be covered in these lovely flowers

It looks like an Hibiscus to me, Ian, but I'm not certain about that. Whatever it is it's very pretty.

Thanks Gee, Its a better guess than I could come up with. Lol

you go boy

It's hibiscus syriacus, possibly the variety 'Red Heart'. If you have a Notcutts Garden Centre near you, take a flower or two in to them - Notcutt's breed hibiscus and they may be able to give you a definite identification.
As a general rule, hibiscus do not really need pruning. However, in late winter you can cut out any shoots growing into the centre of the bush to ensure a free air flow (this minimises the risk of disease). If the shrub is getting too big, you could cut out one or two branches completely but this is really a last resort.

Hi Angie, thanks alot sweety. :~))
I just love it Andrew, When you can take one look at a flower and tell straight away what it is! I'll google Notcutt's but I don't think I've seen one nearby.
.
One more question! Carol has decided she would like to move it from the back to the front garden, Can this be done and how technically difficult is it?

It's gorgeous!!

Thanks Hatter, Mind you it was here when we moved in so we can't take any credit for it.
Now I've got to move it from the back to the front garden? (HELP)

Hope someone can answer that query, Ian, as I would like to my Hibiscus too but, as it was a birthday present some years ago, I don't want to lose it. I might just have a look on Google :)

I've just Googled and I could have saved time by putting the question on GoY! This question has been asked on Goy before and Andrew answered. I hope he doesn't mind but I've copied his answer below:

"Any cutting back should be done in early spring. But it will only grow back to the same size again - may be better to attempt to move it (just after leaf fall is probably the best time) and reduce the top growth in spring as it starts to shoot"

That sounds good to me and I will definitely try it.

I should have known really, where else would you go for proper answers to questions. Thanks Gee and thanks Andrew as well :~))

I'm one happy bunnie now, pleased I didn't :~))

I think GoY as a whole would have had to hunt you down if you had! 8~{

6 Aug, 2009

lol :~))

6 Aug, 2009

Don't you DARE to chop it down, Ian! I love Hibiscus shrubs - I have a blue-y one, and a new white one!

7 Aug, 2009

No B. I would sooner cut my right arm off than face the rath off Carol (and GoY of course) :~))

7 Aug, 2009

You certainly would get in HUGE trouble, matey! :<O

7 Aug, 2009

I warned him, Spritz!

7 Aug, 2009

He'd better take note, don't you think??

A posse of furious GOY-ers wold be hunting him down....grrrrrr...

7 Aug, 2009

Yup! I can imagine that would be a scary sight!!

7 Aug, 2009

Is he listening? He's gone very quiet....

7 Aug, 2009

I was hiding behind the couch............... :~))
I think you would have to be fast to get in before Carol, or else there wouldn't be an awful lot left for you to get your hands on! ! !
I know my limits when it comes to how far I can push her Lol :~))

7 Aug, 2009

Heaves a sigh of relief! Yessss!!!! The Hibiscus is safe! Good for Carol!

7 Aug, 2009

Your all a bunch of bullies Lol :~))

7 Aug, 2009

'Fraid so, Ian. When you are lucky enough to have THAT beautiful shrub, what do you expect??

7 Aug, 2009

If you'd learn to do as you're told, we wouldn't be forced to bully you, would we? Lol! ;~)

7 Aug, 2009

Do you realise that shrub is nearly 6 ft tall? ? ? ?

7 Aug, 2009

That's exactly why you can't move it, Ian...it wouldn't survive a move, I reckon. Definitely not at this time of year - the advice is always to move deciduous shrubs when they're dormant, in the late autumn/winter.
It's just too big and too old to move safely.

7 Aug, 2009

Digger, never mind digging, LEAVE IT!! Lol! ;~)))

7 Aug, 2009

Ok, Ok you lot win, I always listen to good advise.
I will have to replan my entire garden just for that one shrub.......... But hey ho.
Carol has just asked if we do manage to get a move can she not take it with her?

7 Aug, 2009

NO. You'll have to buy her a new one. :-(
