wow, i wonder how many are living in there

A bit scarey, I wouldn't like this in my garden.

Hope you had that camera on full zoom Toto..........

I actually laid about 18 inches from the hole and held the camera about 6 inches from the hole. Wasps were all around my head and not one stung me. None are living there now as my boss is scared of them and he got the pest control people to poison them. Something I couldn't do.

i hate wasps and see no use for them at all, apart from making a bloomin pest of themselves so i,d have got rid as well!!

Sorry to disagree Helen but all living things have a right to life. What right have we as a small inhabitant of the world to decide the fate of other living beings?

11 Aug, 2009

we are all entitled to our opinion god forbid but I kill snails as well !!!

Wasps are scavenger/ hunters many people do not realise just how much good they do clearing up old frit etc, they are feared because they can sting several times unlike the bee, and make summer picnics a pain but they have their place , as does the slug and though I hate to admit it the cabbage white butterflies...
with you on this one Toto for sure...
good picture too

Thanks Indy. Like you I am aware of the good they do but like Helen I agree that everyone has a right to their opinion no matter how wrong that opinion might be. The trouble is that the human race seems to think that they are the only ones who matter and any iconvenience to them should be destroyed. As I stated earlier I had these wasps flying all around my head without receiving even one sting.

Its in your attitude , they were probably quite curious that a human was so close and not afraid or flailing about at them, normaly they dont bother me at all, sometimes if one gets in the way when i'm doing something I'll just waft it away gently they always seem to get the hint and fly off killing them is not necessary, though yes I agree they can nest in some very inconvenient places and i understand why people deal with them. but generally live and let live should be the rule.

you know what ,we will agree to differ .
I hate to be told we are all allowed our opinions but mines is wrong anyway !!
how patronising !!

12 Aug, 2009

im not a wasp lover toto, but i dont kill them, its all part of nature and we dont have the right to interfere really, dont think toto was being nastey helen, we do all have our own views and thats absolutly fine, live and let live thats what they say isnt it ,:o)

Just found one in my wood store - I'm not going in there for a couple of months.

12 Aug, 2009

Only one Wagger. Bet there will be hundreds by the time you go back in. Just be nice to them and they will be nice to you.
I'm sorry if you thought I was being patronising Helen, that is far from the case and the reference to people being wrong refers to me as well as everyone else, it's just that I firmly believe it out side the remit of the human race to play god.

12 Aug, 2009

I meant nest, Toto - not wasp. I don't want to be nice to them, they keep dying in my bathroom.

12 Aug, 2009

Well stop trying to bathe them.

12 Aug, 2009

he he he, what are you on tonight toto,

12 Aug, 2009

Well spotted nice close up picture I smoke they dont come near me. plus a lot of people spray hair laquer and deoderants which attract them to them, I never ware either I just wash, my hair I have in a long pony tail so if ever they did come close I would swish my pony tail like I do with flies.

Well spotted nice close up picture too. I smoke so I dont get the problem plus I dont ware deoderants I wash instead, I dont ware hair laquer I have my hair in a high pony tail like the flies I would swish my pony tail if they did come near me, or perfume either which all attracts them

13 Aug, 2009

13 Aug, 2009

I'll take that onboard, Indy - I'll use an egg timer.

13 Aug, 2009

Thank you all for your nice comments. Remember that wasps are a friend, not an enemy of the gardener.

13 Aug, 2009

You are right there Toto, they are our friends. Sadly I had to have a wasps' nest destroyed a few years ago :(( It was high up in the ivy, but just above where the garden visitors would eat their strawberry teas...and I just couldn't risk them being stung. I felt guilty for ages afterwards...it was such a beautiful, intricate structure.

They are one of the master builders and that's for sure and they carry all the construction knowledge in their minds.

13 Aug, 2009

The wasps "paper" nest is a wonder of nature so precisely built and so light but strong, truely a marvel!

13 Aug, 2009

Couldn't agree more Indy.
