Thanks - I just spotted them together, and I liked it as well! I shall have to make sure that the Solanum doesn't try to choke the Lobelia with one of its tendrils, it's growing so strongly and fast!

Even your accidents are spectacular Spritz.

Not really an accident - the Solanum was always meant to be the focal point in the back garden - well, it likes it there so much that it is flowering like crazy and the flower clusters are too heavy, so they're flopping over from the trellis. I did cut it back by over a half in the spring, but you wouldn't believe it now!

I used to cut my SOlanum back hard and every year it would produce flowers in abundace for a long period of time. Love the purple Lobelia. I used to have the blue ones.

Love the Lobellia.
That's definately one for me to look out for.

They do re-appear, if you plant them in a warm sheltered place. They don't like wet feet in the winter, either!

How's your new Solanum doing, Andrew??

, SH. When you say you cut this beautiful plant back hard what exactly does that mean? Also can I grow it in a large pot to climb over my pergola?

I cut the stems back by a half or even two-thirds to healthy buds in the spring, so that the new growth will climb on (or be trained on) the trellis. It soon shoots out again - it grew about 10 ft. in the growing season last year - over the top of the trellis and into the field behind!
It would have to be a large pot, and you'd have to make sure that the rootball didn't freeze in the winter.
