Covering the large windows

Thanks, Terratoonie. The edge of the storm (which is 750 kms across at the moment) is due to hit somewhere on the southern coast of Nova Scotia some time tonight (early Sunday morning). The eye might slide past south of us, with any luck, but we have been warned about very high winds and heavy rain (up to 120 mm in a few hours) tomorrow morning in particular. Waves are forecast to be over 10 m high, with a possible storm surge if it coincides with a high tide. The lobster fishermen all have their boats lashed together on the lee side of the wharf. We don't hold out much hope for the gardens, but trust that the house will stay in one piece. we know that's what we have to deal with in exchange for our glorious views!! I will post 'after' photos once power is available - we're bound to lose it.

We're just above the 'r' in 'Yarmouth' on the map.

Wow, I've just looked up the link, and the hurricane tracking and I found Yarmouth and the "r". Have you experienced other hurricanes at your property ? Understandable that you'll lose power, but I will be thinking of you. xxx

Elke we will all be thinking of you and hope that the storm doesnt do too much damage there

Thanks for that, TT! Yes, we were here for Noel, which did a lot of damage to our local beach. We protected the windows for that in the same way. We moved here in the spring after Hurricane Juan (Sept. 2003), which was devastating and yet only a Category One. Bill is High Cat. One - possibly Low 2. Juan hit the Halifax area directly.
The house did not have such large windows then, and was fine. It's pretty solid, although it is on the crest of the hill. We usually lose the large vent cowlings off the roof during these storms, and have to replace them. But we do have a basement to which we can retreat if things get really bad! I just feel for property owners on the shoreline or those with big trees close to the house, they will suffer the worst damage.

So kind of you all to think of us. It may be a few days until you hear from me, as power and Internet cables are bound to be down...

Best of luck Elke dont worry about cables aslong as you are safe.
