All red berries, Fl. The several shrubs have totally interwoven over the years to create an invincible barrier, but collared doves, blackbirds and songthrushes like to nest there. Bindweed also likes it. As it is impossible to get in to weed, I just let it clamber up and through the holly. The white flowers actually look quite good against the holly foliage - like huge natural Christmas wreaths - in July/August. But it takes ages to pull out the miles of tendrils, etc at end of summer!

Got a story about a holly hedge for you David... My ex-father-in-law was a veteran of WWII, he had an accident while riding a motorcycle in Britain...an altercation with a holly hedge.... he maintained that although he eventually lost his leg in the D-Day Invasion that that was a time when his life flashed before his eyes...he thought he was going to be taken out by a holly hedge before he got his chance to go to France!! He spoke of lascerations!!
It grows really well in B.C. don't think I'll try it though...I have a rosebush that could take your skin off if you aren't careful around it... that's enough for me!! lol. (Therese Bugnet)
