Errrr, not sure Morgana. I bet Louise will know - I have another one behind it with darker leaves and darker red flowers - I think this is Skimmia Japonica and the other one Japonica Rubella - but not sure.

lol Thanks I will look it up

This looks like a male Dawn and yes it's probably Rubella which has small flowers, you need a female one too to get berries unless you buy a bisexual one which is 'Reevesiana'.
25 Oct, 2009
It is looking well and has certainly settled in to it's new home

Thanks Pipsqueak.
Wonderful info Louise, thank you. You know what, I dont know if they've ever had berries, lol. I've had them many years - so the berries come after the flowers, do they?
25 Oct, 2009
No i don't think so, i think berries form on the female bushes, those flowers of yours are on the males, or get berries on the bisexual one.

Oh, I see Louise, that's very interesting, thank you. You learn something new every day, or so they say :-)

Difficult to tell from your pic Skimmia Japonica or possibly S Reevesiana? Dawn
25 Oct, 2009
You certainly do on here and i love it !
I never mind being wrong or corrected because of this very thing !

Really DRC726!! How exciting, I'll have to look up an image of a Reevesiana to see what the berries are like.
25 Oct, 2009
Thats what I think Louise.

I agree Louise, its absolutely fabulous what we learn and much more exciting than reading info from a book :-)
I've had a quick look at Reevesiana and its says, in late spring, fragrant white flowers, often tinged pink, open from red buds. In autumn, bright red berries are produced - as mine is in flower now I sadly, dont think its Reevesiana - never mind - it can go on my Wish List, lol.

Sorry about that Dawn thought it was berries. But wouldnt Japonica would be in berries too now? I have a S Rubella in flower now - but the leaves are much darker than this. I wonder if yours has been in full sun all summer as I think the leaves can go quite pale in full sun?

That's OK DRC. It in kind of semi shade - I think I'll have to keep a close eye on them, as I have a few - I'm intrigued now, its very exciting.

Have you seen the one called 'S Kew white' it has white spring flowers and white berries in the autumn I am very tempted to get one of those. Have to dig yet another big hole for ericas compost if I do.
25 Oct, 2009
Wow, that sounds lovely, I'll have a look out for one. My wish list is ever growing :-)
