Fuchsias Eva Boerg on balcony 2009-10-21 (Fuchsia)

I can't resist taking close ups of this lovely flower! I hope I can get it to come through the winter safely as its the only plant of this variety that I have.

I did take 4 cutting of each of the 7 varieties I bought this spring & put them in compost. I hope they root so I have plenty of plants for next year.

I hope so too, they do root pretty easily so you should have Eva with you again next summer;0)

Thanks, PP. Yes Fuchsias generally root fairly easily. I have some cutting growing in the clay pots on the balcony railing in aluminium rings. I shall have to move them further into the balcony shortly as the weather can be expected to get pretty cold in November.

I hope the cutting I took a couple of weeks ago root as it's very late in the year to root them. I can't take them into the house there isn't any room. A couple of the windowsills now have two tiers of pots & there are even a few making up a third tier in my bedroom!

Wow they are taking over! but think of the displays you will have next year! AS a novice I have taken a few this year which are on window staging in our conservatory, some looking weedy and losing a few leaves,is this the norm and what care should I give them?

At this time of year I would say it's pretty normal. Fuchsias after all are only semi-evergreen most of the time they drop their leaves if not kept actively growing. The light could also be to blame as well as lower temps. There isn't much you can do about them now unless you can provide some extra heat & lighting to encourage them to grow during the winter.

I hope they pick up for you then, PP. I would very much like to know how they get on over the winter. I'll post occasional comments on how mine fair during the winter. Unlike you I have no warm place to keep them & they will have to fair for themselves out on the balcony all winter.

Having said the above I have taken every precaution I can to make sure they come through the winter ready to delight us all again next year. :-)

I promise to keep you updated, PP, on my baskets of Fuchsias. Well they are still flowering & they don't seem to have found the move into the balcony very stressing.
